Tamiya Yamaha YZF-R1Tervo 05-12-2009, 12:46 PM Hi, this is my latest WIP, been building it for about three weeks. This is Tamiya's nice kit of 98-99 model of Yamaha YZF-R1. Tamiya offers decals for both the metallic blue and the white/red model for both years. This is going to be '99 white/red model. Have been using my "standard" paints, Alclad for metallics, Vallejo for basic painting and Mipa brand automotive paints for the cowlings (water based for colors and 2K clear laquer). Here are some pictures: http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4525.jpg The engine painted mainly with various shades of Alclad, still missing some detailing. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4530.jpg Stripped the chrome from frame and painted with Alclad aluminium. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4542.jpg Main parts painted with pure white/Rosso Corsa, cleared and decals on. Seat painted with Vallejo black and a drop of light grey to tone it down. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4553.jpg Main cowling with decals on and the final clear coat. Decals were very thin, the black stripe was very difficult and I managed to get a couple of wrinkles on them. Happily they dissapeared under the clear coat. Thanks for looking! Tibi Keke 05-12-2009, 02:18 PM Well done so far! It's looking good! ;) ben_gsr2s 05-13-2009, 06:41 AM nice and clean.. sure turn-out great!! Spike123 05-14-2009, 02:28 PM Looking good so far Roca46 05-17-2009, 11:25 AM Very clean and nice vivid colours!! How is that kit coming? Hope we could see new pictures soon  Roca. Tervo 05-26-2009, 01:09 PM Thanks to you all for your comments! A small update. The swinging arm is almost done! Metallic colors all Alclad, the others mainly Tamiya and Vallejo, except the spring witch was painted with Gunze's acrylics. Disc brake is from Crazy Modeller, not standard when compared to the real thing, but looks OK. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4561.jpg http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4562.jpg kans0002 05-26-2009, 01:41 PM lookin sweettttttttttttt! very clean. what alclad shades do you use besides aluminum? Stuart Seventyseven 05-26-2009, 05:59 PM Beautiful and sharp! Thankyou for doing Red/White, I gotta find me this kit. colbro1973 05-27-2009, 09:54 AM looking great, one question, when you spray the frame alclad aluminium, what do you use for your basecoat, i.e. black/grey? also, do you clearcoat the alclad afterwards to stop it marking easily? Cheers Colin Tervo 05-27-2009, 10:15 AM one question, when you spray the frame alclad aluminium, what do you use for your basecoat, i.e. black/grey? also, do you clearcoat the alclad afterwards to stop it marking easily? Cheers Colin This time I used Tamiya semi-gloss black as a basecoat for engine, frame and swinging arm, and Vallejo flat black for other parts. In the previous Moto-Guzzi project I used Humrol black enamel, but it seems acrylics provide more bite for Alclad. Have not tried to clearcoat Alclad, but it is true you have to handle painted parts very carefully. Stuart: engine block is titanium (propably not quite true on a production bike), oil pan polished aluminium, carburettors, rear shock and some other parts are dull aluminium, the chain is pale gold washed with Vallejo black and the brake cylinder is jet exhaust. colbro1973 05-27-2009, 11:07 AM yep, your metals look great, previously when I have used alclad, I used to use Tamiya TS gloss black which was great for chrome, since the TS sprays have gone from the UK, I have really struggled to find a basecoat that I like. I have clearcoated alclad with Mr Hobby Gloss, it does dull the alclad slightly, but stops marking, worth testing first! I like the effect you get with semi Gloss underneath, i may try that next time. Cheers Colin joelwideqvist 05-30-2009, 06:25 AM I think the rear disc does its job. Very nice to add some detail parts to the street bikes. They most often look the like besides the paint schemes. /Joel Tervo 06-02-2009, 03:27 PM Some progress again, only for a couple of photos. The engine is now in the frame as is the rear fender and tail light unit. Still some work to be done with the swinging arm before it can be installed. Also started with the exhaust/muffler. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4567.jpg http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4572.jpg Roca46 06-03-2009, 01:43 AM Coming very nice!! I'm waiting to see more pictures of that exhaust pipe. Keep that good work. Roca. Tibi Keke 06-03-2009, 02:06 AM The engine and frame looks very well! Tervo 06-09-2009, 01:34 PM Just a quick preview to show you that I haven't been lazy during the last few days! Assembled the exhaust with the muffler, the task involved some chrome removal too. Then after the seams had been taken care of, sprayed some Humbrol black enamel over the whole thing. After the enamel had cured, did the CF decals provided by Tamiya. Once again wait until they dried and a Zero gloss coat over them to get rid of a couple of wrinkles. Then some polishing and Vallejo flat clear over the exhaust collector. Next will be some masking and Alclad chrome. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4574.jpg Roca46 06-09-2009, 02:58 PM Coming really nice.. but maybe was a better election to paint it balck then apply the chrome and then put the decals... but I'm not sure if is possible to give it a gloss coat to the alclad chrome. Anyway be careful with the masking tape over the decals, but if you have applied a gloss coat over them I think that the masking tape will not break them. I will be waiting for more pictures :iceslolan:naughty: Roca. ketje 06-09-2009, 03:18 PM Looking nice. Instead of masking tape you can also use teflon tape. I will not stick to the decals and it doesn't affect paint. It's great to work with. Tervo 06-10-2009, 01:26 AM Ketje and Roca, I appreciate your warnings! I know the decals are very easy to break when removing masks, but I didn't want to mask Alclad, not especially the chrome. One of these days I have to test how chrome reacts with different kinds of clear coats. But not with this kit! joelwideqvist 06-10-2009, 04:08 AM Looks good Tervo, will be nice with some chrome on that system! /Joel Tervo 06-10-2009, 12:00 PM Happy to announce you that there was no problem with masking or removing the masks after Alclad! http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4576.jpg Roca46 06-10-2009, 01:52 PM Happy to announce you that there was no problem with masking or removing the masks after Alclad! Fantastic news!! The exhaust looks beautiful now with the alclad chrome :iceslolan good job! Roca. Tervo 06-23-2009, 11:53 AM Slowly getting this done! Now the front forks are almost there, still missing brake disks, throttle and other controls. The front wheel is fixed temporarily to aid in gluing the forks together. It is extremely important to get the forks straight in these bikes, because even slight misalignment will be clearly visible. And yes, the front tire is turning at the moment wrong way! http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4584.jpg TRBJ 06-23-2009, 12:31 PM Ketje and Roca, I appreciate your warnings! I know the decals are very easy to break when removing masks, but I didn't want to mask Alclad, not especially the chrome. One of these days I have to test how chrome reacts with different kinds of clear coats. But not with this kit! ive been clear coating alclad with enamel clear and it works perfectly everytime :) Tervo 06-23-2009, 02:11 PM And a quick follow-up. Managed to install the swinging arm to the frame, now it is gradually starting to look like a motorbike! Note there is a Ferrari wheel under the oil pan. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4586.jpg http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4587.jpg Roca46 06-24-2009, 03:53 AM Now it is taking shape! Well done! You and other guys of this forum who made street bikes, have inspired me... and I'm going to buy an R1.. of course 1/12 scale :iceslolan:runaround: Hope to see more updates soon. Roca. Tibi Keke 06-25-2009, 07:59 AM Hi Tervo! I have a possibility to buy exact the same kit for a very good price. How ever, i would like to know if the decals are good quality and easy to work. I had some bad experience with decals for un other kit in the last weeks and i don't want more problems. I would appreciate if you could inform me about this! Many thanks in advance! Tervo 06-25-2009, 11:32 AM Hi Tervo! I have a possibility to buy exact the same kit for a very good price. How ever, i would like to know if the decals are good quality and easy to work. I had some bad experience with decals for un other kit in the last weeks and i don't want more problems. I would appreciate if you could inform me about this! Many thanks in advance! The decals are normal Tamiya decent quality and are set nicely with MicroSol/Set. I had some minor difficulties with the black stripes in the fairing, got a couple of wrinkles in them, but final layer of clear took care of that. Perhaps they are easier to lay down with the hot damp cloth/Q-tip method than the solvents? Tervo 06-25-2009, 12:33 PM Once again small progress. This is one of the smoothest going projects that I have had! The exhaust is now in place, I had a bad feeling that there would be some difficulties with the four pipes glued together before painting and then fitting them to cylinder head, but they just slipped into their holes! The rear brake is now "wired", as well as the coolant hose in front of the engine. Next steps will be the radiator and the front wheel. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4591.jpg Tibi Keke 06-25-2009, 01:28 PM Thank you very much for your answer! And about your bike - great progress! joelwideqvist 06-25-2009, 02:27 PM I think it looks great! Will look nice on your shelf! To you Roca, I must say that my R1 build was one of the most fun bikes I've built. So fun to tune and tweak a street bike. Keep it up Tervo! /Joel Roca46 06-26-2009, 08:57 AM To you Roca, I must say that my R1 build was one of the most fun bikes I've built. So fun to tune and tweak a street bike./Joel Hey Joel!! I had that kit a long time ago when I was 8 poor bike.. I never finished it finally went to the trash (super bad work done) I will start a thread as soon as I get the kit from Hobbyeasy. Back to the thread, how is everything going with the bike Tervo? Roca. Tervo 07-01-2009, 02:37 PM Back to the thread, how is everything going with the bike Tervo? Sorry, Roca, at summertime my builds are even slower than in winter, because I spend all the weekends at my cottage some 240 kilometers north of Helsinki, near city of Mikkeli! However, something finished. Assembled the radiator and after it mounted the front forks to the frame. The front is still missing brake disks, which will be next in the queue, as well as the handle bars and speedo. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4592.jpg A quick mock-up how she looks with the tank and the seat: http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4594.jpg Roca46 07-02-2009, 09:15 AM Wowowow This an absolutely beautiful bike :grinyes: I have to say... I loved it so much that I just bought that kit a week ago so I will start a thread as soon as I get the kit from hobbyeasy. Hope to see more pictures! It is always a pleasure. Roca. Fazer1006 07-02-2009, 12:04 PM Hey Tervo, That looks great! Built one of these when I first got back into modelling, Love to redo it again & yours has wetted my appertite:licka: Love the prep work on the panels.:grinno: Mark:wink: Tervo 07-02-2009, 02:16 PM Thanks Roca and Mark! Seems the Tamiya sales of this model are increasing rapidly, pity that I'm not sponsored any way by Tamiya :grinno: Roca, it seems we have the same source of models, Hobbyeasy! I'm very satisfied with their service at least for the past four years. Tervo 07-08-2009, 03:21 PM Some more progress. Painted and installed the handlebars! Also assembled the headlight unit. The photo shows a dry-fit of the upper fairing to the frame. Have been arguing with myself whether to use polarizing filter with the camera or not, all the other pictures are without, this is with filter, what do you think, which is better? http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4672.jpg joelwideqvist 07-09-2009, 05:26 AM Better with filter, that's my opinion. Great progress! joel ketje 07-09-2009, 07:27 AM Better with filter, that's my opinion. Great progress! joel YEP I agree Roca46 07-09-2009, 01:42 PM Better with filter, that's my opinion. Great progress! joel :1: Good work!! I would like to see this bike finished soon :grinyes: Roca. Tervo 10-06-2009, 12:52 PM Not yet given up hope to finish this kit! Had a long break, spent August at my summer cottage, and had some motivation problems during September. How ever, I gradually painted all the remaining parts, and now she is nearly completed, and just in time, because we are having a local competition next weekend. This is how she looks at the moment. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4790.jpg And test-fitting the upper cowl http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4792.jpg Tibi Keke 10-06-2009, 02:52 PM It's looking great! I wish you good luck at your lokal competition! sportracer02 10-07-2009, 01:52 AM Looks cool, hope to see it finished soon ;-)) Tervo 10-07-2009, 02:58 PM The last update before finishing (I hope). The windshield is glued, as is the upper fairing. Also the fuel cap was painted and glued on pace, although not visible in the picture. Still missing mirrors and drivers foot pegs. http://koti.welho.com/tsalmin6/Mallit/Projektit/Yamaha%20YZF-R1/slides/img_4794.jpg Roca46 10-08-2009, 02:42 PM Coming really nice, that was one of those threads that inspired me to make a street bike after a long time with Motogp bikes. I like the windscreen, is that black line a protection in the edge of the windscreen? Hope to see it finished soon. Roca. Tervo 10-08-2009, 02:54 PM is that black line a protection in the edge of the windscreen? Roca. Yep, painted with Tamiya flat black. Roca46 10-08-2009, 03:01 PM Yep, painted with Tamiya flat black. So, a very beautiful detail  Good job! Roca. joelwideqvist 10-09-2009, 04:06 PM Very nice indeed. I too like those great details, the wind shield edge, the fork tops, the brake discs. As always I think that the R1 plate ruins a, in every other way, perfect build. I would have made a miniature plate or cleaned up the undertray, removing the plateholder. /Joel Tervo 10-10-2009, 02:52 AM , As always I think that the R1 plate ruins a, in every other way, perfect build. I would have made a miniature plate or cleaned up the undertray, removing the plateholder. /Joel Agreed, I also dislike it. Have to be redone after this weekend. Seventyseven 11-05-2009, 07:45 PM I just ordered this kit, hoping to build it as a '99 R6 like my 1:1. Very similar looking. YongGun Park 11-05-2009, 08:18 PM Very nice job on this bike and photos. YAMAHA R1 was my first bike model, and it made me a bike modeler. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
