'88 Pontiac Formula ?'sBigBenOwens 05-11-2009, 05:40 PM Whats the most powerful engine I can fit in this, with out it making it slower than the lighter engine types? MagicRat 05-11-2009, 06:55 PM Your limit for speed and power is not the engine design. The limit is the size of your bank account. Speed and power cost money. Many of these cars came with a small block Chevy (either 305 or 350 cubic inch). There is a massive array of aftermarket performance parts, and even entire "crate" engines which will bolt - in, both small and big block, so parts availability is not a problem. If you wish to build the car with 2000 hp that will do the quarter-mile in six seconds?? Or do you want a car that will cruise at 200 mph? Theoretically, it's all possible, just by applying large amounts of money. Of course, powerful engines require equivalent transmission, axle, chassis and suspension mods to cope with the power. So, seriously.... how much money do you want to spend to go fast? How much work do you wish to do yourself? These are the questions you should be asking. BigBenOwens 05-11-2009, 07:15 PM Umm, About $5,000 (Or more) over thed period of 5 years or so, And I would like to do most of it myself, And I would want it to go as fast as possible(with in that price) Edit: How much do Turbo Chargers for this model run for? P.s. Thanksfor the help!!! quick69gto 05-11-2009, 09:23 PM Depends on what engine is in it. 5.0L? Forget it. Replace it for something bigger. 5.7L? Check out the following link: http://www.highperformancepontiac.com/features/hppp_0812_1988_pontiac_firebird_formula/index.html Happy hunting. BigBenOwens 05-11-2009, 10:01 PM Thanks, You guys were a lot of help =) Ps. Wht kind of carb would be best for this? MagicRat 05-12-2009, 08:06 AM Thanks, You guys were a lot of help =) Ps. Wht kind of carb would be best for this? Do you have a 305 or 350? I think the stock TPI injection system on these cars is pretty good, and can be modified on it's own. All engine mods must be coordinated so they work well together. For best results, the cylinder heads, camshaft, exhaust and intake mods must be designed so their engineering complement each other. A lot of the guesswork can be taken out of this by choosing a manufacturer who makes an entire package. For example, Edelbrock sells all these parts as matched components, so you know you will get decent results. You do not have to buy all the components all at once. I would suggest to start with a free-flowing exhaust system with decent headers first. Also go for a K&N air filter. Then, at a later date, you can go for a camshaft and, (if money allows) better cylinder heads. At this point in time, you may have to modify or replace the intake system, It depends on what the manufacturer suggests, with their cams and heads. BTW there are many other manufacturers that make these parts, other than Edelbrock. If you do mix and match parts from various makers, you have to know what you are doing to choose the most complementary parts. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/ BigBenOwens 05-12-2009, 05:41 PM 305 Aldo, wht Headers would work best with it? BigBenOwens 05-13-2009, 01:28 PM How much would the exaust cost? I'm trying to figure out a budget for this year, My state doesn't have an auto club, but i am Planning on making on in the future.
