01 Windstar ABS Light & Brake Light OnAndrew1941 05-08-2009, 03:01 PM 3.8L with 130,000km. The parking brake light and the ABS light came on and stayed on while driving. Then after stopping and turning off the ignition, it went away and stayed gone for a few weeks. During this time, because it was well overdue, I changed all four brakes and bled the system. All is well with the brakes, but the lights came back on yesterday. Again after stopping and restarting the van, they went away and stayed off again? The manual says this means unequal distribution of braking pressure. However, my wife indicated that nothing out of the ordinary happened and she was driving at the time, not braking. Any thoughts? By the way, no codes are showing after she brought the van home, but maybe next time, I will ask her to not stop and restart until I get a code reader on it. wiswind 05-08-2009, 08:30 PM The FIRST thing to check is the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder resevoir. If it is even slightly low (low side of the full line), it can trigger the low fluid sensor, which will turn those lights (Brake and ABS) on. garync1 05-10-2009, 03:52 PM Mine been coming on as the weather gets warmer again.. From what i understand its the ABS module starting to go.. If it stays on and does not go out.Its time to change the Module.. I keep resetting mine at stop lights.. Just turn ignition off and start van back up... If its a hot day it will stay on longer.. During the winter I usually have no issues. Been going on for 3 yrs now.. Once the lights stay on and wont reset I will have the module replaced.. Andrew1941 05-12-2009, 07:50 PM Lots of brake fluid in the reservoir. Hasn't come back on in close to a week. The only code right now is that relentless P0401. I have already changed the manifold gaskets, bolt grommets, cleaned the ports, changed the plugs (motorcraft), changed the wires, the DPFE sensor, inspected for leaks three times! Of course I did not do all this at the same time! I had the code gone for a while after fixing some of those things, but it came back again a couple of weeks ago. Can't seem to figure it out, but I am beting the aftermarket DPFE sensor is gone (only about 6 month old). I need to test it again soon to either identify the problem or rule it out. Maybe the ABS module is on the way out? Anyway, like I mentioned, no noticeable symptoms except the lights in the dash come on here and there. Is there a way to test the ABS module to see if it is functioning correctly? I thought about the ABS module only because when changing the brakes recently, I saw how cruded the sensors had become. I wiped the rings clean and the gently cleaned the sensors (without removing them). Wonder if I would get the lights coming on if one of the sensors at the brakes was dying? Maybe there is a way that someone knows how to test them? wiswind 05-13-2009, 09:55 PM The ABS light will also come on if it sees the wheel speeds not matching up. A ABS code reader will tell you what code is stored......which would tell you which wheel (if it is a wheel sensor value that is causing the problem). It is not uncommon for a wheel sensor to get bumped....and be too far from the exciter ring.....causing the ABS light to come on. The exciter ring is the gear like item that is located on the inside side of the front disk splash shield.....looks like it is on the end of the half shaft........and the sensor is located on the front side..... Here is a link to a picture that shows the exciter ring and sensor on the front...... http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2030899680011220610romxdY On the rear (with drum brakes......the exciter ring and sensor are located inside the brake drum and splash shield.....so you have to remove the brake drum to see it. Here is a link to a picture that shows the rear wheel sensor and exciter ring with rear drum brakes. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1361356086011220610aXnisj When doing a inspection......I would recommend that you have a couple cans of brake clean spray....and spray down the sensor and exciter ring at each wheel. The rear sensor is the one that I have seen posts about being slightly too far.... However.....the sensor should NOT be touching the gears of the exciter ring.....make sure that there is a small gap. Andrew1941 05-14-2009, 03:30 PM Thanks wiswind.... good ideas. The sensors and rings were pretty dirty when i changed the brakes, but I didn't have and brake cleaner handy at the time, so I just wiped the ring down with a rag and got some debris off. The lights came on before and after the brake change, but never any codes. I will keep watching for the codes and if I have time, pull the wheels off again and spray the rings and sensors clean. challengerta 05-14-2009, 08:47 PM I had the smae problem changed the abs pump lights haven't come back on had a misfire on no. 6 changed plugs wires coil injectors finily changed the egr value misfire gone on codes van runs great good luck .
