Good day to all.

I have a 1993 Astro van and i love my van. Pimped it pretty good
and more parts are coming to make it look better, but i have a serious issue with my instrument cluster. None of my gauges are working, so i am currently using the auxiliary ones. The one i need the most is temp
as i put the volt, Fuel and fuel air mixture gauge and they work pretty good, but my temp ain't working the way it should.

I have installed the cup that holds the gauge and all and found the Signal wire for the temp sensor "yellow". Once i connect the signal wire to my gauge and start "try to start it" the van simply runs like crap. black smoke coming out of the exhaust, running rich and smells Gas pretty bad.

So i decided to disconnect the signal wire from the gauge, and the van starts just fine just like it use to be?

Now, am i missing something? if i can't connect the gauge on the yellow signal wire, where should i connect it to have a proper reading for my engine temperature? as summer is coming and i sure don't want to lose my rebuilt engine.

TIA

The yellow wire you are connecting is likely the wire from the CTS. That sensor reports to the ECM, and is not intended to operate a gauge. The lower impedance of the gauge input is probably shunting the signal down so the ECM thinks the coolant temperature is -40º.

You need to find the green wire from the temperature sender on the RH side of the engine and tap into that.
