1991 Camry LE 4-cylinder, automatic transmission (japan) -

Hello, I am new to AF!

This problem has been happening for a while but only recently has it been noticeably worse. It started with only a 'whistling' noise when I accelerate past 4-5K RPM. The sound would go away after it shifts gear, then come back at higher RPM. As it approaches higher RPM, it would also shake a bit, kind of like it's 'slipping' or losing power.

Currently, the car still has the same symptoms only worse. I have to slowly accelerate (not past 2-3K RPM) to get up to speed and to not shake. This would also happen when the car is on the highway when I decide to accelerate more (from idle). Again, the best way to describe it is that it's slipping or losing power and it takes a while to gain acceleration.

Any thoughts, opinions or help with this would greatly be appreciated! I just want to get an idea what the problem is before I get it to the shop.

Also, the timing belt has not been changed in a long time. Is this part of the problem?

Thanks.

The shaking would be typical of, though not necessarily limited to, ignition failure under load. Are you due for new plugs, cap, wires, and rotor? The whistling could be almost anything and will likely require an on-the-scene diagnosis.

Rough engine and slow acceleration is a sign that the cap, rotor, and plugs need attention. Replace/regap the plugs, and clean/replace the cap & rotor contact terminals.

Also, check that the EGR and PCV valves are working correctly and are not clogged or plugged up.

While you're at it, get some carb cleaner and a toothbrush and clean out the intake and throttle body...get both sides of the butterfly valve.

Most of this would be covered under a "tune-up" but not including the parts. Beware that if they recommend a EGR valve replaement because it is plugged, that is an expensive part...try to clean it first.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot guys! This is really helpful

What is a good brand when buying a spark plug wire set? and what is a good price range?

Bosch makes decent plug wires, but stay away from their spark plugs. NGK and Denso are the most recommended in here, and I've had good performance from Autolite platinums. Don't let anyone sell you the split-fire, dual fire, +2, +4, super turbo extreme plugs...they're a waste of money. A set of 4 should run $12-$16.
