1999, Cav. 2.2, alternator bearing noisy need to replace, removed unit, removed pulley, removed 4 bolts, cannot split housing to remove armature. What is holding it in? top housing will not slide off pulley shaft. anyone know how to split unit and replace bearings?

I waited a day to respond, hoping someone would have experience rebuilding one because I have only rebuilt one and that was a requirement for school and had never been on a vehicle, and being disassembled and reassembled so many times, it just about fell apart for me once I removed the housing bolts. Yours may need to be forced a bit from corrosion where the halves are joined. For the bearings, I'd assume once you get the case apart you can just knock them out with a punch and a hammer. It's simply not cost effective for us to rebuild one when we can get a remanufactured on that came from an assembly line worker. Plus a reman unit will have a warranty on it. Sorry I cant help more... you may want to try posting in Chevy "non-specific" since this alternator is not specific to just the Cavalier, there's a couple members that frequent that forum that I bet will know.
