Adjusting the timing

I have a quick, and probably dumb question (excuse the mechanic-wannabe over here)...

Setting the timing on a fuel injection system would be done by a computer or one of those OBD tools, am I right? Or is it set mechanically like back in the carburetor days?

The timing is controlled by the computer according to settings of different sensors. I may be wrong, but there is no way to set it without a mangagement control that is several hundred dollars.

My 87' OBD l, EFI 5L (ECM controlled) F-150 easily allows Base timing modification. Stock is 10 BTDC. I'm set at 14 BTDC. Better performance & 17/22 mpg. 79k on the motor. However, later model, OBD ll Fords don't allow for this luxury w/o ECM program modification. Not one of Fords "Better Ideas" but is designed to prolong engine life at the expense of performance (Factory Detuned)). Most cars are so poorly maintained that a 1-2 degree additional advance results in Ping (Big Time). Certain "Ducks" have to be put in a row , prior to & and kept there during additional timeing advancement operation or else it can get ugly fast.
