Im starting to get worried because my cav is making a grinding vibrating noise coming from my gear shifter on this 2.2 automatic?? it does it a little bit when im on the highway when i go to stop and it shifts down and just when i take off. ??? i hope to God this is not a major problem with anything. it's been running great since i changed my oil and plugs and had a small backfire and loss of power problem. im also going to be changing my coil pack because i think it's bad. Any help with this noise would be awesome.

Are all the gears correct? Like is there 3 'clicks' from park to drive? All I can think of is if the cable is stretched, maybe the shifter lever on the transaxle is between gears. I've never had to deal with adjusting one on a Cavalier, but on the Lumina vans, there's a black thing on the transaxle shift lever that has a press in lock that you pull out, put the shifter in park, push the level all the way towards park, then push the lock back in. Perhaps the Cavalier is similar. I wouldn't drive it like that, the grinding noise has to be coming through the shifter cable from the transaxle, there's nothing in the center console that could make that noise.
