I actually bought 2 Dells. I got an email from them at the end of Feb with a 24 special for $199. I bought one then and a couple days later went to their outlet store site and bought a "previously new unopened" for $229 for my daughter. They look identical, but mine is running Linux Ubuntu and hers XP . Ubuntu's not that bad of an OS once you get used to it. I was a little apprehensive, being a Windoze user the last 7 years, but it's not that hard to navigate.

I like it a lot. A lot lighter . The keyboard isn't that bad to use as some may think with it being smaller. I still use a mouse as I hate the touchpads on laptops . It's easier to move around too. The power supply cord is smaller too , and lighter than a traditional laptop's also. I like the internal wireless card as well. My daughter likes hers too. She can move it from room to room easier and to the printer if she needs to print something.

For certain things the laptop is better such as games, and the text is larger,( you know when you get older it's harder to see the finer print ) I use mine on my lap and it.s a lot lighter and doesn't get as hot as a regular laptop does. The fans are a hell of a lot quieter on the netbook. It's pretty much everything a laptop is, only in a downsized package.

My brother is looking for something to take hunting with him so that he can easily download all the pictures from his trail cameras. I'll recommend that he check those out.

How's the battery life on the Dells? That is one netbook I haven't gotten a good answer on yet from anybody.

'97ventureowner

I'm still getting used to the keyboard layout as evidenced by some of my punctuation errors. The " ' key has been moved under the period and comma keys so I have to sometimes remember that. The netbooks are a good choice for traveling as they are lighter . I read the description from Dell on mine with Ubuntu and it mentioned something about ease of downloading pics from cameras without any extra outside devices like a loading dock and something about software that comes with the OS.

The ones on my Dells are 4hours 15 minutes on full charge. On mine with Linux there is an icon that lets you know how much battery life remaining before it needs recharging. it also tells you if you are using battery power or AC power.( I mainly use AC power right now but as the weather warms around here, I'll be using it outside the house more.)

I was looking at an Asus that people claim to be getting 7-8 hour battery life out of... I donno how true it is though...

blazee
04-04-2009, 01:45 AM
Could be true, battery tech is the same, but the netbooks have a lot less power requirements.

One of our local tv stations runs a 3 to 5 minute spot during the evening newscasts from Consumer Reports spotlighting something they've recently reviewed. A couple weeks back they did the new netbooks. They said the battery life for all of the netbooks they reviewed ranged from 2 hours to 6 hours. Might be worth checking out that issue where they did the reviews to confirm that.

Desktop's have their place. My wife has one. My two year old has one. I just built another one for my 4 year old last month. I have one. I've also got one that I built and connected to my home theater, it will play absolutely anything, and the instant movies from netflix are great. When it comes to work and websurfing I use my two laptops about 95% of the time.

Yeah I'm lucky if I use my desktop once a week any more. I'm either on my son's because it's in a convenient location, or a laptop.

Why does you daughter have to move to the printer to print something. You can set up your network to share a printer on another computer.

'97ventureowner
04-04-2009, 02:09 AM
I know. It.s on my list of "things to do" The computers aren't even networked yet. I was thinking of going wireless for the printer. What she does sometimes , and yes I know it's archaic, but it's easier right now, but she will send me what she needs printed in an email , then I open it on my desktop and print it from there as that is where the printer is hooked up.
I'll probably get around to it once I finish remodeling my bathroom.

Blackcrow64

Since we are on the subject of printers... Any ideas why two vista machines would keep losing a printer on the network? I keep having to set this bastard up for my parents computers and it's driving me nuts... I can't wait till I can scrap vista and give them windows 7...

Set it up as a local printer, but for the location use the printer's network address.

Really... They just need a printer with a network card in it. Right now this thing is connected to my dads PC via USB and my mom's PC keeps the printer on there but it doesn't print things. They just pile up in the queue. Clear it all out and try and it never goes. Test pages, nothing. Delete the printer and re-add it and then it prints fine. I donno what the hell is up with it. I want them to get a new printer so I can just plug it into the switch and eliminate this problem.

blazee

When it quits, have you checked to see if the computers connect at all? It might be a network problem rather than just the printer.

Yeah, I checked everything out. I can pull files from one PC to the other with no problem and both are still connected to the rest of the network with no problems. It's almost like her PC is loosing rights to use the printer or something. When I set up the printer each time, it needs the username and password of the PC the printer is connected to. I thought maybe that had something to do with it, but it seems to just randomly hit when it stops working. Doesn't make sense to me that it can work all the time I'm around and then quit working when I'm not there...

I don't have googletalk. I'll have to download it when I get home and then hit you up on there. Might be a little safer than trying to find the install elsewhere. lol

It's been years since I transfered anything with it, so I'm not sure how long it will take. The program itself doesn't limit anything so it just boils down to our ISPs.
