OK..Have changed the oil in this car a dozen times...but never messed with the o-ring in the plastic cap. Ok....so I removed the oil one and put in a new one...no big deal. Well it did not want to set in the same place...kept rolling out. So I put a few drop of superglue to hold it in place.... Well it now leaks.... to tight? ...I tightened down by hand, the cap the is, then turned in 1/2 with the special socket. I still leaks ???? I must be doing something wrong....

Change the oil filter again. Any time you change an oil filter when you change your oil you need to lube the rubber ring, just take your finger and dip it in the old oil you just drained, and rub your finger around the ring before putting the filter in.

OK....maybe I did not put enough oil on it...I did dip my finger in the old oil and wipe it around it.... So there is no need to glue it into the cap ???

The oil filter cap is a problem sometimes and Dorman sells the cap

I'm assuming you've got the 2.2 Ecotec engine that uses a drop in oil filter cartridge. If you overtighten the plastic cover you'll have problems. The correct torque is 16 lb-ft. If the plastic cap is not damaged fit a new O ring of the correct size. Don't glue it.

Yes, it is the 2.2 ecotec with the drop in filter...

OK....16 ft lbs..that is good to know...... I have done this before, but never used a torque wrench and it NEVER leaked. I have inspected the o-rings, I now have 3 of them...none are damaged. So I put the orginial one back in last night.....

I will try it all again this morning....and check it with a torque wrench. I also may replace the cap as suggested....something has to work...This is NOT a major overhaul....

Sounds like the best advice to me, I got kinda threw off when I heard the word plastic cap from the original thread I just thought the person was calling the oil filter a plastic cap for some odd reason. Also thought at first they was talking about the oil filler cap and accidentally typed oil filter cap till I saw where it said special wrench to turn it. Never seen something like that(plastic oil filter cap) before how does that work now that I know he was talking about something different.

On the Ecotec engine you change the oil filter cartridge from the top. It does not use the usual cannister filter. The cartridge fits into a large upward facing hole in the engine block which is then covered by a screw in plastic cover aprox. 3½ inches in diameter. The cover is actually very sturdy. I use a 1¼ inch socket which is a perfect fit to remove and replace it. It's convenient and not much oil is spilt when changing the cartridge.

OK....time to update this thread and thank everyone for their input.....my bad guys. I should have just left the O-Ring alone....every rarely do they need replacing. Some come with a oil filter and some done. If you do replace it, make sure you put it in the same location on the filter cap. I had it in the wrong place...how dumb of me.

It requires no glue or RTV...just coat it with engine oil, install the oil filter and torque the cap to 16 ft/lbs......and you are done !!!! I will never make that mistake again.
