One bad, one good; in IowaJ-Ri 03-31-2009, 07:32 PM I installed a GM supercharger kit on my car and needed to have the PCM recalibrated with the new A/F map. I went in to Pat McGraths (in Cedar Rapids, IA) to have them do it, since the recalibration is only available to GM dealers. The service advisor was rude and talked to me like I was an idiot. It says in the instructions that come with the supercharger that for the warranty to be honored, that you cannot drive the car until the PCM is recalibrated. Knowing the danger (and how to avoid it) of driving without the recalibration, I drove it anyway. That was one of the first things I told him. Nothing ever breaks while it's under waranty, so I don't need one. I also told him that because there was no warranty, I didn't need the inspection for the warranty (which it says in the instructions could take up to a full day). This guy told me twice that there wouldn't be a warranty because I had driven the car, after I told him that. The SPS update for it would take less than an hour, and he said that they'd need it all day just for the update. The reason he gave was that the download takes longer later in the day. That's complete BS. The download is small, and I talked to two independant technicians that do GM SPS updates who said that the downloads take about the same no matter what time it is, and usually takes 20 minutes to download. They just can't do it because you have to have a dealer # to be able to get the VCI# from the hotline. So why did this guy want my car for 8 hours??? He kept pushing me to bring it in a 7:30 and leave it. I have a feeling I would have a $960 bill if I went there, $120 an hour. The I went to Grovert Chevrolet (in Newhall, IA). The guy there was courteous and took a little interest in my car. He said it would probably be about a half hour, and they actually have 30 minute minimum charge. That's less than at my shop, most places charge a full hour. The hourly rate was less than 1/2 the price than at McGraths, worth the long drive IMO. I think it will probably be a full hour, but I'll be pretty happy if i got out of there for $47.50! I'm taking my car in tomorrow to have the recalibration done (at 3:00 PM, not "all day"). I'll update if it isn't as good as I expect. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
