Thanks for your time. I'm writing a script about racing engines and I'm wondering what sort of problems a mechanic could hear just by listening to an engine run. Things that others might miss.

Any ideas?

Anything and everything. Just be reasonable with it, nothing extraordinary like a dragster with open pipes and the guy can hear a mouse in the trunk.

What if it's a big mouse?

They can also hear damn near anything the engine is doing if so properly equipped and trained. Just be sure to use descriptive sounds when describing the problems, like, it goes Crasaaaaohhhaaaaga crsshshshssss zaaaaler creeeek when you hit the brakes. You have to use descriptive sounds so they know exactly what you are talking about

If you have danger to the manifold, you just gotta tell your computer to shut up and spray more NOS.

a good mechanic can tell if a cat conv is clogged by listening out the tail pipe....

One of my older cousins is a master tech, does great work...swigz dad actually, but he cant hear high pitched whistling noises...kinda funny
