1998 Regal LS won't start... totally dumbfounded..heyraver 03-29-2009, 03:14 AM Hello everyone, I'm having trouble with my 1998 Regal LS. Its a 3800, non superchared. The mileage of the vehicle is unknown. The car does not want to stay started. Right when the motor fires up, it dies in a matter of seconds. If I try to start it up again, it will turn over, but not start up. If I give it gas while starting the car, it will start fine and stay running, but once I let off the gas, the car dies. The car has new plugs and wires, it has spark and is getting fuel pressure. All voltages are fine on the censors(most censors I could find at least). The car did have Check Engine Light on. I got the codes tested and the comp brought up 4 codes. I don't remember what the codes were, but all 4 codes were linked to some kind of EVAP malfunction. I had a friend take a look at my car and he said that my MAP censor was full of oil.. He left the MAP censor off and pulled a hose from the EGR valve and the car starts up fine... I don't know what could be? I'm totally stumped.. Any advice anyone? BNaylor 03-29-2009, 09:40 AM Pulled a hose from the EGR Valve? All it has is an electrical connector. It is electronic not vacuum operated. How much oil is on the MAP sensor? Some is normal since the PCV valve is is located under it. Have you checked fuel pressure? What are you getting spec wise? heyraver 03-30-2009, 09:32 PM Pulled a hose from the EGR Valve? All it has is an electrical connector. It is electronic not vacuum operated. It wasn't an EGR valve, it was a fuel pressure regulator. I didn't plug a fuel gauge in, but I pressed the pressure valve and gas squirted out, so i'm thinking it has enough pressure. I brought it to a shop today, so i'll see what they say tommorrow.. DMCGEE 03-31-2009, 01:30 PM Please do let us know what you find out. I have a 96 GS that is doing darn near the same thing and no one can figure it out. Thanks heyraver 04-01-2009, 11:33 PM Okay, so I got it out of the shop earlier today. The problem was a really dirty throttle body and Idle Air Control valve. I notice a big difference in performance now. DMCGEE 04-02-2009, 07:15 AM Thanks for the info....I will check the same on my 96 GS. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
