Its been a year and a half and I still can't shake that po341 code. 1998 Tahoe 4x4 5.7. Local shops can't help me and the dealership told me they will hook it up to there machine for $170 dollars and go from there but no guarentees that they can find the problem. If that was a sells pitch I'd start looking for a new one. So I said no thank you. So now my plan is to rewire the camshaft position sensor from the computer to the sensor with a new pigtail. My question is will spicing this wire at the computer and running the new wire to the sensor cause any problem with anything.

Instead of splicing into the existing wire, can you not use the new wire as a jumper? (by-passing the old connections, etc?)

I take it you already replaced the sensor?

Well what I was gonna do was cut the two wires at the computer one being the sensor return and the other being the sensor signal wire and running new 16 guage wire and the new camshaft sensor pigtail I got. I've already changed the sensor and the whole distributor out. This is a problem that has had it down for over a year and a half and between me and two different shops we have replaced every thing electrical and did all engine checks. The only thing thats left is the wiring harness that I cant afford due to the dealer being very proud of it.

You can replace any wire you want to on a vehicle, as long as it is the same gauge, and you make sure you connect both ends where they are supposed to go, and make sure you have a good tight connection. Make sure you don't run any wires through holes without rubber grommets, and make sure your wire isn't near some place where it's going to get hot and burn up, and use wire straps to keep the wire in place to make it look neat. A person could make their own wiring harness for a vehicle if they had all the right connectors and tools and a wiring diagram. That's why they are so damn proud of them, because they know you have to have it and can charge you out the butt for them. I think they should make all plugs on vehicles for sensors, injectors, you name it, standard. Meaning you could just go to an autoparts store and by packs of them and have no problem making your own harness. If they did that the prices of them things would drop dramatically.

This is out of my '98 C/K Service Manual for P0341:

"Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) from the ign coil or spark plug wires could cause a poor signal condition in the CMP circuit to the VCM. Ensure the routing of the CMP harness is correct. Also check for installation of after market accessories and harnesses creating an EMI."

Things to check.

1. CMP harness routing too close to dist (HVS) or plug wires.
2. After market stuff routed too close to the CMP to VCM harness.
3. CMP to VCM harness routed to close to any solenoids or relays.
4. Inspect CMP and VCM terminals and connectors.

Maybe you've already done this, but if not I hope it helps.

What have you done to diagnose the code? Has anything been replaced?

the sensor connector should be replaced,,,,also with the pcm removed from the sensor measure for the correct resistance and move the wires to see if the circuit holds the sensor resistance...

this will rule out wiring....don't forget the pcm/computer connectors for damage/green slime....etc....this is a very low signal and yes if it runs near the plug wires you will get error DTC's...

the dealer would rather to have you buy a new vehicle ...
so don't count on these people to go for the GOLD.....

Well its been in two shops and whats been replaced is the camshaft sensor, crank sensor, computer, The entire distributor, All plugs and wires with a/c delco, Ign control mod, map sensor, all fuel injectors, mass air sensor. Have timing checked, compression checks, coil checked, alternator checked, checked for vacuum leaks, checked fuel pressure, oil pressure, checked timing chain, all grounds and cleaned, and all good. All this and still throwing the po341 code. Nov will be 2 years of battleing this problem. Thank you everyone for all input and suggestions, means alot.
OK now heres where I'm at now. Last night when it was totally dark I look at everything under hood and the bottom of the coil is glowing lightly and the coil wire has a slight glow next to any metal part even after I wrapped it with electrical tape, is this normal or not cause I've never known a coil to glow at the base.

did they replace the ignition coil ?
the ignition wires must be checked with a ohm meter...the wire resistance must match the oem spec....

NEW WIRES DON'T MEAN GOOD WIRES !

I just changed out the coil lastnight and it stopped the light glow but did nothing for the running of the truck. Still runs rough and backfires out the exhaust. For some reason when I turn off all lights I'm still getting a small arch around a couple of plugs even though the plugs and wires are new and I used that jell stuff they give you with the plugs. I start work tonight so on my next days off I'll do a little more inspecting, But I don't think the light glow from the plugs will make it run that rough unless it was some larger arching. The arch is real light in total darkness.

Oh your right about the wires so I'll try changing them again just to make sure. I'm going to try a different brand though just because the a/c delcos are a $185.

I don't care what brand you buy...all plug wires need be checked for proper resistance...

when plugs are replaced wires must be checked also....this is usually when the damage is done ...do the pro's do this ???
na! takes too much effort..
