I have a 2002 Santy 4 cyl and it is getting harder and harder to start. I have changed the plugs and no help. It throws a code saying misfire in #1 cyl. I have had a ignition coil go out and I am sure that's not it. Could an injector be going out. It used to start when you just touched the key, now cranks about 5 seconds. Tried some injector cleaner, no help. Any ideas?

Hard starting like that usually means the fuel filter is getting clogged. It's a cheap fix, so I'd try that first.

So how many miles?
When did you change the timing belt?
Air filter?
Plug wires?

Seriously doubt it's the fuel filter. The fuel filter is in the tank, you rarely ever need to change it. Probably the fuel pressure regulator allowing the fuel to bleed back. Therefore, when you go to start it, takes a second for fuel to build back up at the fuel rail. That's the most common thing we see on an extended start problem.

I will look into the fuel pressure regulator. Is there a check valve built in the fuel
pressure regulator or is that a sepate thing? Tried turning the car "on" a few times without starting it to see if it would build up pressure and start easy and it did! Thanks John, how much is a fuel pressure regulator?
thanks, Greg

I believe the check valve is on the fuel rail. Not 100% sure, I just sling parts. The regulator lists at $52.58. Dealers can charge whatever they want though, so be prepared for it to be more. If you want to get it from me, I can do $40.00 plus shipping. I would have to order it though. Don't see too many problems with the 2.4L regulators. Much more with the 2.0 and 2.7Ls.

OK, thanks John, i'm going to take a look at it and see what kind of job it will be. $40 sounds good, when I get around to looking at it will give you a call.
Greg
ps: just hope it's not the check valve, but I don't see 1 listed anyware
