98 Monte carlo Z34 Alternator 3.8Lemba129 03-23-2009, 07:52 PM Can someone tell me how difficult an alternator is to change on a 3.8L Z34. It looks straight forward as it in on the top of the engine. What is the stock amperage and what do you recommend as a good replacement? Same amperage? or more? thanks Chris richtazz 03-24-2009, 05:01 PM the alternator on your car is about as easy as it gets. Disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine belt, disconnect the voltage regulator harness plug on the alternator, the main battery feed cable on the back of the alternator (10mm or 13mm nut), and the two alternator mounting bolts and it's in your hand. Your car most likely had 105 amp alternator from the factory. There was a 140 amp optional unit, but it isn't interchangeable with the 105 amp (it has a different voltage regulator plug and a wider mounting bolt pattern). There are rebuilding shops that may be able to put higher output windings into your original unit if you have a big stereo or other electrical add-ons, but the 105 should be more than enough. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
