Cool, I can't wait to read that article. I have been following his progress and had a few e-mail conversations with him about the project.

Knowing George it will be full of good writing and great pictures.

Wahh, I think you'll have to wait. I was in Chapters yesterday and the November issue was still there. Georges article is in the December issue. BTW, good job George..give you a case of Shiner Bock and you'll do anything. ;)

Anyway you'll probably have to wait till the 29th till it hits the shelves. Subscribies might get it sooner. :(

Since it appears that most all of us are not subscribers, but buy it every month anyway. How about a group deal on subscriptions? :D I have over 3 years of SCC's on my bookshelf here (my roommate was in awe when i unpacked them) haha. Man, to think how much i would have saved with a subscription for the past 3 years.. oh well. Id still pay the extra money without even thinking about it as I think that magazine is the best written car mag out there right now, Kojima's articles are the great!

G-Forces
10-24-2001, 04:36 PM
A subscription would be great but as a Canadian subscriber I find first of all I don't actually save very much money and secondly the delivery is a little flaky. Sometimes the mag will arrive upto a week after they hit the stands. If I was living in the US I probably would subscribe but the cost savings to me as a Canadain isn't worth while. :(

The flywheel, pulleys, Extrude Hone, and Swain coatings really work well. Off boost the car feels very much like a NA engine (where usually on a DET it feels a bit sluggish off-boost). It spools early and smoothly. You cannot really feel the boost come on, it's that smooth. When you hit about 3k rpm, it really takes off, but you can definitely feel the boost lower. You just cannot feel when it starts building. I do not have a boost gauge (running stock boost) so I don't even know where it starts building, but it's pretty low.

The mods I did are not inexpensive. A bigger turbo will make more power for sure. But, what I did makes the car much smoother and easier to drive.

I'll be at next year's convention as well. I don't know if I will be driving my car out or not. Kerry and I are trying to go to Australia next year on our frequent flyer miles while the redemption miles are reduced (by a full 25%). If that happens we won't have enough vacation time to drive out.

Thanks for the kind words.

No aftermarket mounts in the car. In fact the ones I am using have 50k miles on them. I have no interest in stiff engine mounts in this car. I am trying to keep it quite civil. My goals have been a car with the feel of a good European tuner car. That means no vibrations in the cabin due to hard engine mounts.

They work just fine for me, but then I'm not at all hard on the drivetrain. Don't mistake that for a granny driver, but I'm sensitive to the machine and don't abuse it. They would not be what you wantn for a serioius drag or track car, but I'm not interested in driving a boy-racer on the street.

BTW, I'm really close to my goal for it. The coilovers are surprisingly smooth - only the worst bumps are really hard, and that's due to bottoming. If I can raise the front about 0.125 - 0.250" and/or get some Truechoice bumpstops on it, it should be really sweet. I get a bit more squeaking in the coachwork, but I should be able to hunt that down and stop it. I need to do something about swaybars. I've got a few things in mind.

I do indeed plan to buy a Remus 2.5" dual outlet universal muffler and probably a Magnaflow resonator. I will be building the exhaust myself using mandrel U bends that are readily available. I'll have to borrow, rent, or buy a welder now. I borrowed a welder to tack the pipes for the IC and had someone else make the full weld.

If your goal is maximum power, yes. That's not my goal. I want my car to be very quiet with good flow. I'm willing to give up a few hp for a car that is extremely easy to live with as a daily driver.

James, I thought you knew that. :)

They don't have 98+ ECU's available. The 96-97 ECU is still ODB-II and you can modify that ecu to work with the P11.

Change the rear O2 sensor to a 96 200SX P/N. Cut your wiring harness a bit. They have instruction (not specifically for the 99+ G20) and you can always call for help.

I wasn't 100% if it could be done as easily on the 99+ G20 as it was to do in the 98+ 200sx. However after talking to Ben at JWT he got the confirmation for me.

I still don't like the fact that I'll have to cut up my harness. It just introduces another point of failure. But I probably won't have a choice. Like one of the members on the main SE-R list says, "Do you want to go fast, or do you want to suck?" :D

G22DET
11-30-2001, 02:08 PM
JWT has been giving some help on this...apparently, ONLY the 99 G20 wiring harness can be plug on to the 95-97 SER ecu, meaning that as of right now, if you want to turbo and get the right program, only the 99 G20 can benefit from both.
I am waiting for JWT to fax me the entire instructions on what exactly needs to be modded to make our harness work on the ecu, but from what i heard from them, it's very simple.

No. The Bluebird DET uses the exact same valvetrain as the DE (with the exception of sodium filled valves). It uses HVLAs and rockers. It has shims and rocker guides, but they are very different from what you are talking about.

The GTi-R engine uses mechanical lash adjsutment, but it still uses rockers, which is also quite different from what you are thinking about.

When I read the unstable hybrid list, they said the RWD DET has shim in bucket, I know this is true for the KA. I thought that the SR's shared the same valvetrain but I wanted to double check before I run off at the mouth sometime in the future. Thanks again.
