97 Probe clutch problem
03-12-2009, 08:03 AM
Many have probably heard of this problem....replaced the clutch, bled the system and the pedal will not return. The slave cylinder will also push out but will not return but if you use your hand to push it back it will go back. Is the problem in the slave cylinder? Master cylinder? It doesnt seem like anything is right because you can shift into any gear while the car is started and will not move or stall out. I am not the one doing the work I am just getting information for the one doing the work. All I have to say is that I am glad I turned this job down. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to AF. The arm on the slave cylinder presses against the clutch release bearing which in turn presses agains the tines of the pressure plate. For some reason the release bearing is not lined up with the pressure plate and it is keeping normal spring tension from moving everything back. I don't know what is wrong but the clutch will need to be taken down again and looked at. For some reason the pressure plate is depressed all the time just like pushing in the clutch pedal. It takes the tension of the clutch pressure plate to return the slave cylinder and hence the master cylinder. It' s tear down time!
