So, I guess I'm going to use this thread for any updates I do to the Spyder. But I will also use this to document my new project car. I bought my buddies GST. I originally bought the car for the engine, ecu, and harness. But since its a basically complete car, its almost a shame to kill it. All it needs is a m/t transmission and I will get one whenever I find a used one for a good deal. Anyways, most of you have seen pics of the car before, but I got some new ones now since I finally got it to my house. I want to get the car running, finish some small bodywork, and just spray paint it flat black, then completely smoke out the head and taillights, and black out the windows. I will then gut most of the interior and any other useless weight. Basically I want to use it as a dedicated drag car. It probly wont be too fast, but for the money I will have in it, I wont mind pulling it to the track and beating the S*** out of it, and improve my driving in the process. After I get it running, I am going to leave the engine completely stock, then put ATLEAST a 75 wet shot on it. Cheap, easy power.
I guess I will write a quick list of the mods I want to do.

New t belt, BS elim.
Atleast 75 wet shot, maybe 100.
Used tranny, and cheap race clutch.

Probly just put some coilspring boosters in the rear springs, and some spring squeezers on the front springs to shift most of the weight of the car on the front tires.

-Stripped to bare essentials.
-Put on a cheap Grant steering wheel from my store(to get rid of the airbag)
-And throw in a cheap TunerFX seat that has been in the back of the storage unit at my store for like a year (some ricer ordered and never came and got it, and everyone forgot that it is back there).
-Cheap harnesses
-Probly add a boost gauge.

-Cheap used smiley face front end and cheap side skirts.
-Finish filling in the spoiler holes and antenna holes.
-Fix one small dent.
-Sand the primer and rattle can the car flat black.
-Dark smoke out the tails and headlights.
-Tint out the whole car 5 percent and tint out the windshield.

-Cheap slicks.
-Im going to talk to the guy that does all my welding and see if he can put a band in 2 of the steelies, to widen them by 2 or 3 inches.

Heres what we have already done:
-Dericed and cleaned the interior.
-Stripped the 7 layers of old paint and primed.

Thats about all I can think of right now. Tell me what you guys think about it along with any suggestions, or just talk crap if you want to, IDC. I think it will be a fun car. 300 hp in a stripped car should be pretty sick.

Heres some pics. Disregard some of the stuff on the car, a ricer had it before us.

Nice rice pipe!

Lol check out someones attempt at a short throw shifter!

Got a few more pics. Finally got a lil time to work on the car.

I picked up some 2 tone 96 gsx sideskirts from a friend. I'll probably buy his 96 front end too.

So heres the sides before:

And the sides after. I need to touch up the silver.

Check out the pimpin door panels. Dont ask me why they are different colors because I dont know.

I have yet to understand why people paint their interior plastics. Heres the before:

And after:

I should get some more stuff done this week since I dont have school. I'll probably get the door jambs painted and finish filling the holes in the quarters and hatch.

Doors turned out GREAT!! Wow.

Thanks alot man. I did them that color to match the rest of my interior theme. Today I worked on filling in the the holes for the wing, wiper and antenna. I made some backing plates and epoxyed them to the underside of the holes. A light coat of filler and they will be good to go.

Looks awesome man, cant wait to see the finished product

Done some things to the car. I picked up some 2ga bumpers, headlights, and fogs. I also made alot of progress on the bodywork. Let me know what you think.

Heres when we went to pick the car up. Pulled it wid da Hoe:

I havent really done much with this car. Kinda been waiting around until I get a tranny.

But, ...
I'm pretty sure I found one that I want. I'm supposed to go get it this weekend. Just gotta talk to my brother tn to see what his work schedule is, since he is the one with the truck. I will keep you guys informed.

Havent messed with the car a whole lot.

Smoked the headlights and taillights and fog lights. Will also be doing all the other lights. Not completely done with them yet thats why, they arent all on the car.

I also redid the headliner last night. Never done one before. I went to an upholstery shop and the real headliner material was $28 a yard....F that. Went to walmart and bought some black material for $3 a yard. Also encorporated a raised mitsubishi logo into the headliner. Let me know what you think. I will get some better photos of it im the car.
Forgot to take a pic before I ripped the carpet off, so I just layed it back on there lol.

There was a bunch of foam mess that wouldnt come off so I had to scrape it off with a wirebrush.

05-05-2009, 10:57 AM
wow, that car is looking alot better. I cant wait to see it once it is painted. How does the headliner look? My roomate recovered his in suede. It looks pretty good but there are a few small wrinkles in some places.

vanilla gorilla
05-05-2009, 11:15 AM
Thanks. It actually looks perfect. Its hard to tell all the details in the pictures from it being black. But yeah, its free of any imperfections at all. No wrinkles or anything. It was alot easier than I thought it would be.

05-05-2009, 12:18 PM
Headliner turned out awesome man!!

vanilla gorilla
05-12-2009, 10:08 PM
Thanks Steve! Im pretty much at a stall until I can afford to get my ACT clutch. Then I can throw that in, with the new trans!

hey man you need another headlight? Ive got a pair id give to you if you cover the shipping

Actually I have 2 sets, I just wasnt done with the other light at the moment. I surely appreciate the offer though!

vanilla gorilla
05-20-2009, 01:34 PM
Worked on the car a little the past few days.

Basically I've got everything apart to allow the trans to come out. When my brother gets off work 2night we are going to drop the tranny.

My ACT clutch should be here today, along with the stainless line kit (master to slave).

Other than that, I pressure washed the engine bay a little bit, until my brothers pressure washer broke. I didnt break it, it just broke while I was using it. Guess I got to buy him another one, lol, I will take it out the car fund.

I also started touching up the bay a little. And I painted the brake calipers black...they were

Couple other things I noticed. The lateral lower control arms are brand new OEM mitsubishi parts. I'm guessing they had the recall done or whatever. Because I think those were recalled right?

Also, the car has a junk yard tranny in it already....So this will atleast be tranny number 3 that Im putting in. Heres a few pics:

05-20-2009, 07:03 PM
Startin to look really good. That car is going to be awesome when you finish it. Good luck putting the tranny in it.

vanilla gorilla
05-20-2009, 11:15 PM
Thanks dude.

Another update. Will take more pics tomorrow.

Good and bad new.

Got the trans out pretty easily. Pulled the old clutch and got to looking at it. Seems like a fairly new clutch, I'm guessing it was replaced whenever they put in the last tranny. Got to inspecting it and the pressure plate had some very bad heat spots on it. Looked at the flywheel and it was showing the same thing.....but its cracked in four places. So the original plan of using the stock flywheels is out the window. So my brother dropped off the stock flywheel out of my GS at the machine shop to get it turned. I will pick it up 2mrw and check it out. If anything, I will just order up another fidanza fly, and ARP bolts.

vanilla gorilla
05-22-2009, 02:02 PM
More pics. Tranny is out. Also, I took the stock flywheel that came in my Spyder and got it resurfaced yesterday, though I forgot to take a pic of it.

So here is the PP and disc out of the GST. You can see the heat spots on the PP and check out the springs on the disc.

The trashed flywheel

Hard to make out in the pics, but it shows a few of the cracks.

The tranny amongst other junk crap behind my building.

Random pic of the bumpers while I was back there.

Trans thats going in. Still havent cleaned it:

Getting ready to re-build the cylinders. Ran out of money so I can't buy the kits yet.

T25 looks big from back here

Crap I'm putting in :D

Whatcha think?

05-22-2009, 05:03 PM
loving it!

Thanks for helping me with my clutch choice stevie

vanilla gorilla
06-08-2009, 11:11 PM

Been a while since I have updated. Havent had much time to work on the car.

But what I have done since last time:

-Got my stock Spyder flywheel resurfaced and installed
-Installed the ACT clutch
-Installed the tranny
-Rebuilt and installed the master and slave cylinders
-Put the mechanical aspect of the car back together.

So I didnt take any pics this time. But I have a few videos. One of the car in progress and one of it running. Which I will post up in a few.

Funny thing happened. First time I test drove the car, the steering wheel locked up and I ran it into the house. No damage on the car, minimal damage to the house. The reason it locked up is because I dont have a key for the car, but if you jam a screwdriver in the key hole, it doesnt lock. So I took the ignition lock cylinder/ignition switch housing out (which was a booger, lemme tell you) and fixed it so that the wheel wont lock anymore. Though I am not going to tell you what I did to it. :p

I am going to post up the vids, tell me what you think

This is a vid of the car in progress:

So heres the vid of the car running. I was just screwing around in the driveway, making sure that the clutch and trans is in working order. The car runs kind of choppy, theres a big vac leak I have yet to fix.

Havent messed with the cars much lately.

I bought the same 3" ebay exhaust as Jason. It fit kind of rough, half the hangers didnt line up. Also, I had the same problem Jason was having; Where the catback bolts to the DP, the pipe was pointed down at the ground at like a 35 degree angle. So I cut the flange of the pipe and rotated it some, so that it would pick the pipe up. Also, I have an ebay 3 inch DP. The exhaust necks down to 2 1/4" where its supposed to bolt to the stock cat. I bought some extra piping and a 3 inch V-band. I am going to cut the flanges off the catback and the DP, and use the V-band to make a complete 3 inch setup. Here are some pics. I will post up more when I get done with it.

Also have some updates for my GST soon.

Extra pipe and V band:

Grapefruit shooter, just held up with coat hanger for the time being.

Where the catback meets the DP. The part that will be cutoff and mated together with Vband.

Where I had to cut the pipe off the flange, rotate it and reweld. Just tacked in place for the meantime.

I will post more pics next week when I finish it up.

01-22-2010, 06:33 PM
Looking very nice. Bottom of your car is spotless! Got tired of the "red neck exhaust" as you called it?

I don't get how you guys had problems with that downward angle. Doesn't make sense. Mine was perfect, and just a crappy ebayer.

Thanks bud, I appreciate it. And yea I detail the underside of my car every two washes. As far as the exhaust goes, I just wanted to quiet this one down a bit and get rid of all the vibration. Me and my girl want to rock this car to the beach some this summer.I still love loud trashy exhausts. Lol actually I took my cousins z71 to the muffler shop the other week to get exhaust run. I was talkin to the guy about what I wanted them to do to it. I told them to do whatever they had to do to make it as shitty sounding as possible.

But back to the car. Yea I tried my best to adjust the exhaust but there was nothing I could do to fix the problem. But its good now. I should have it finished up next week along with some sound clips.

01-23-2010, 05:37 PM
Looks exactly like mine, although I cut the pipe in half and rotated that so I wouldn't have to reweld the flange possibly warping it. Also going to angle the muffler on mine up when I get a chance, I dont like how its pointing down. Mine doesn't seem to be as bad as yours

vanilla gorilla
01-23-2010, 10:03 PM
I'm not worried about warping or anything. Everything will be tig welded.

01-24-2010, 09:38 AM
Ahh I love custom work on stuff that SHOULD ideally all fit together perfectly. I'm glad we all have the ability to do that around here.

01-24-2010, 11:03 PM
wow who has a tig? that must be nice

vanilla gorilla
01-25-2010, 12:11 AM
Lol, what do you expect for 100 bucks?

The guy that I have doing my welding. He has a shop where all he does is, its called "The Welding Shop"....go figure.
But he's the only person I let do certain projects, like stainless and aluminum, etc. And he is very reasonable with pricing. Lol, he welded a cracked racing rim that I put on my black civic right before I sold it....held air perfect, and balanced great.

Got some lifter tick, as you can here in the vid.

Finished my exhaust on the Spyder today. Came out great. Sounds very quiet, but I like it. Makes it much more enjoyable to drive. Also, Jason had mentioned that on his exhaust the muffler was pointed down some. On mine, the muffler isnt pointed down at all. I need to take some more pics 2mrw, but this is what I got so far.

Also, I got a 2GB front end for my GST. The headlights need to be cleaned though.

01-27-2010, 08:27 AM
Looks good man, thats doesn't seem to be the same exhaust I have, mine has a huge resinator that probably hangs an inch below the pipe, its hit the ground a few times already. Yea take a pic of the muffler tip. Mine is only pointed down a little bit, didn't really have a choice on that one. I ended up having to put gaskets in my vbands to keep them from leaking, im curious to see if yours leak at all.

vanilla gorilla
01-27-2010, 10:34 AM

If the v band leaks, I've got a few tricks to fix it. My buddy works at the school bus garage and alot of buses run vbands, so he told me some good ways to seal it up.

Yeah that was the point. Paint looks hot? On which car? The red car....paint needs some serious TLC. I bought a big ass high speed buffer, and im going to buff the shit out of it.

Yea wtf man, quit holding in the secrets..

My buddy told me to wrap tin foil around it, then put the clamp on.

Dont make me ban you! lol jk man

Do it! Dave will un-ban me.

What color you going with for the GST? Car idles nice too BTW!!

Wow, I really havent decided...and I'm taking it to school next week and im going to work on it 2 days out the week every week. So I need to be deciding what color to go with. I originally wanted to go back factory white,.....but if I'm going to put all the work into it to do it right.....I'm thinking I'm going to go with something a little different.

And yea it idles good, just need to fix a vac leak.

Sound clip I recorded for guys on tuners....PEEP IT:

Worked on the car today. Didnt take any pics. I welded up every hole on the car minus the door handles. Welded up every spoiler hole, antenna hole, rear wiper hole, front and rear window squirters also. Thursday I am cutting the rear glasses out, and finish the filler work. Hopefully get it primed Tuesday.

Can't wait to see a shit ton of pics

So it has taken me alot longer to finish the bodywork on this thing. Mostly due to the fact that I suck at mud work. But I finally finished it all up. Heres a few pics of the car in wash primer. More updates Thursday.

I finally got to use one of my new guns, so that was cool.

Little update on this thing.

Finally got it home. Havent messed too much with the body anymore. Fixing some odds and ends under the hood.
Seems like I have really low oil pressure at idle, when its warm. So I'm going to do balance shaft elimination to bump the pressure up. The car has a good bit of miles on it. Runs really hard though, really suprising. I bought some used kyb struts with coilovers to drop it.

Things to do:
-Balance shaft elimination
-Install the new waterpump I got and put a new T-belt on it
-Find and fix vac leaks
-Install the new struts
-New pads and rotors

05-10-2010, 02:47 AM
sorry to jack your thread bud but i gots a question.
