I have a 1997 f150 4.2 that needs the main bearing replaced. how hard is this to do and what should it cost? is it worth JUST doing that or should i do other things also?

Thanks in advance

I don't know anything about your particular engine but in general to just replace the main bearings for the crankshaft you have to remove the oil pan and sometimes you can get away with just removing the cap and very carefully tapping out the bearing from under the crankshaft until it will spin out on it own and then push the new one in and then torque the cap back on.

The biggest pain in doing all this is actually getting the oil pan completely off, cross-members or steering components are often in the way.

The hell with all that, just pull the motor out. If you dont there is slim to none chance you'll have enough room underneath.
