i picked up a 88 crx from from a older lady, who said it was her son who unfortanitly had a bad bike wreck.and after told her to get rid of his bikes and car.i went to look at it and at first site i was not not even sure i wanted to test drive it.it looked a bit beat up as far as dents and dings,a some pretty good rust under the gas lid.but i was just after a good gas mpg car to get to work and back.so i took it for a spin and right away i notice it the exhaust note was pretty mean sounding.so i got in it to see what she had or if it would fall apart, and was pretty shocked at how quick it felt.i have driven a truck my hole life and guess i was not use to a little ricer.got back and the lady said she would take 500.00 for it,so i figured runs good, good mpg,and pretty quick why not.she gave me a stack of paper work for it,and i got to looking at it and it looks like he put a motor in it a little over a year ago.the car had the origanal paper work and i dont think he put the same motor the car came with and was wonder what i had?i found a shipping order and it had the numbers 16 b a something engine on it.i could not make out the, does that mean any thing to any body?like i said ive driven trucks and dont know squat about honda's.THANKS FOR ANY HELP

well first off the crx is generally a peppy car if its not a beat old d15b2. if its got a b16 like you say it would then it would be pretty quick..but i doubt it does for 500 bucks..its probably got a d16 which is a sohc (Single overhead cam motor). we could tell the body by above the right rear turn signal. it should say dx, si, hf.. but look at the motor papers and also the engine code which is located to the left of the headers look below the head where the block meets the tranny(facing the car/motor)..its probly grimy so wipe the area with a rag and cleaner..

take some pics of it and we'll let you know. at least youve got records. the body will probly be a little beat most are gonna be because this car was made in 1988..i used to have a 98 hf and the thing was rusty and looked ok but would get 45 mpg..then i got my 91 si and swapped a b16 in but that costs several thousand to do it right..

Welcome from all us ricers

Yeah, people still use the term "Ricer". I use it to describe American cars that have been modified in a shitty manner moreso than dumbasses who rice out their Hondas and Nissans.

As far as your DOHC 1.6 question, it might be a ZC engine, which is either a D16A8/9 or a ZC (that's all the tag will say, other than a serial number). Check the cost of install and the date on the receipt, if you can't find the engine code on the engine.

If you post up when it was installed, and how much it cost, someone on here will have a good idea of whether it might be a B-series engine or not. (They were expensive back in the day, and still quite expensive compared to the cost of the average Civic/CRX.)

It's a B-series, alright. I can't personally tell if it's a 1.6 or 1.8, but it's definitely a B.

Did you look at the flat spot on the left of the header? That will tell you exactly what it is.

Based on the fact that the engine mount looks like a stocker, I'd say it's a JDM B16A... as an afterthought though.

No,I Looked around but could not remeber where to look.I will check it out tommorow, the car has been at my dad's sitting due to a severly cracked winshield.I got that fixed today and am happy to be driving it.Is this a good honda motor,it seem's fast to me but again not use to small car's?

Nope - it's crap... the whole car is crap... I wouldn't give you $200 for it.. but I might give you $199, if you deliver it to me. I'll even give you a ride home in it. ;)

Yeah, it's a great motor. You're actually beyond entry level for most B-series swaps, honestly, if it's a B16. If you take it high up in the RPM range, you should feel a sudden "kick in the pants" feeling, which would be Vtec. If you don't, chances are, it's either not a B16, or Vtec just isn't wired in, either is quite possible.

I have a 1988 CRX DX, the engine is smaller, 1.5L, yours is 1.6L engine originally for Si model
The body metal rusted is ok, the main body steel are very good and not rust at all.
My have idle air control valve problem, but I know how to make the engine run slow and quiet.
Is your car automatic transmission or manual?

We've already established that his engine isn't an Si motor.

Considering that the car you're talking about is a unichassis design, if any part of the rear tub is rusted, that would be the "main body". The only "easy to replace" parts are the front fenders and filler pans.
