Beaten to Death - Head or LIM Gasket?

I realize this has been beaten to death- but I could not find any real definate guidelines or info on diagnosing the "coolant in oil" issue on the 3100.
I'm in process of tearing the LIM off now.

Is there a definate guideline on determining if it is JUST the LIM, or the Head Gasket as well?

It's really cold out, as I can only work on this outside and do not want to do the headgaskets if I don't need to.

Thanks!!!!

I assume you started taking it apart. Run compresssion test. If compression is good, you don't have a leaking headgasket. Also check the plugs for any signs of coolant residue on them and the green or orange or whatever color coolant you are currently using in it. the plugs should be mostly ash grey.

If you are going to tear it down to the LIM then take the time to do the head gaskets as well. Mine was diagnosed as LIM did it and then the head gaskets leaked and did it again. I am good at pulling the LIM but my pocketbook is still crying. lol
