have determined that leak is coming from the "piston"? . Front cylinder that moves wheels side to side. Passenger side leaks very bad. Can't find any info on how to remove unit so as to fix or reseal it. Any info anyone can give will be appreciated

I think you want to remove the steering rack to fix the piston(s) leaking?
Here's (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=934483) a pix of the rack.

Can seal be repaired without removing rack? Also pic was incomplete as it did not show the whole view, seals were missing

Pic is OK...but I think you will have to remove the rack....I did it once (to replace inner tie rod ends) , a hell of a job....but can be done. The key element is you must first disconnect the steering column and lower the subframe 4-5 inches at the rear...

I suggest replacing the unit with a rebuilt from aftermarket..not that expensive......take it complete with inner tie rod ends so you will not have to do it again...

Thanks for info, did'nt want to remove rack but if it's the only way, I guess I have no other choice. Pic does not show in its entirement, gray shadowing to top and right side, but I'm not good with computers so it could be just me. As soon as weather permits I'll giveit a shot

I had an inner tie rod changed passenger side on a 96 (3.4 engine) & the rack was in place.

Mech did the job so don't have any details.

It is possible to change the inner tie rod end with the rack in place, but you will need some "special tools". I have done this on the passenger side. It saves a lot of time and work. But, I donīt think it is possible to fix a leak with the rack still in place.

Ok, guys. Went ahead and changed rack & pinion unit. Also changed tie rod ends at same time. Although its a pain to get at the supply lines, it really was'nt a tough job. Took about 2hrs and if you don't have proper tools it could take longer. Tie rod ends came off just by rapping casing with a hammer. ( small hammer wont work ). Slid unit out of left wheelwell and reinserted same way. Total cost (without labor) $168.00 plus core charge which obviously I'll return.
