My engine was making a tapping noise. then it got worse, and the engine would pause almost like a misfire. i took the valve cover off on the side with tapping. i saw that the first 2 valves were broken. well the very first the rocker arm was off the spring. the spring was missing the a washer and something else. the second rocker was loose and not on the spring. I know this has to be the problem. well i found 1 valve stem key near the 1st spring. i have a question when this happens does it destroy your engine? I am afraid the parts that are missing went into the cylinders and damaged them but i do not know that much about engines.. basically nothing. I was also wondering if this could have been cause by some one flooding the engine then keep on trying to start the engine? because that's what my dad did. One last question is this job fixable or best left to a pro? i was thinking of getting the engine rebuilt for 1k because the spark plugs have oil on them. I found some crate engines for 3k though which are 350's mines only a 305. just hoping for some feedback, i don't know many people that work on cars. the only person i know is my brother he told me the camshaft and timing chain was in the rear of the engine.. :screwy::screwy:

You might want to think about pulling the head off....You'll know what kind of damage was done to the piston if the valve broke off...My bet is that you'll have to rebuild the engine if the pistons are damaged...Last I checked the timing chain was located in the front of the engine.....hahah

Hey, thanks for the response. Well Actually, TODAY, i fixed it. Was pretty minor, i guess. I don't think i damaged the valves, because only the push rod was bent which i replaced. Your right though i should take the heads off, because i need to put new gaskets on the heads, and put new rings on the pistons. The whole reason why i had this problem was the retaining clips came off the spring. well i got lucky i found booth.

For anybody who buys the valve spring compresser from autozone. When you start having a hard time compressing the spring put a screwdriver between the bottom part of the tool for leverage. took me a while to figure that out:banghead:. Btw dont buy the one from morso for 89$ unless you have lots of money.

I'm rebuilding a 327 as we speak ... I'm installing the pistons right now....I hope you have patience's...your going to need them if you don't have the engine out of the car..Good luck...
