Steering Wheel sliding in and out

I got a 94 Escort Wagon, that runs really good, no problems with the steering other then you can pull the steering wheel out I would say about 3 inches or so...It'll slide in and out if you pull it but otherwise it usually stays put and I haven't noticed any trouble steering it so far other the on occasion hearing a slight squeaking or rubbing sound...Any ideas what is wrong with this thing and where I look to fix it...Thanks

Im making a wild guess; that the 4 bolts that are supposed to hold the steering column up to the support bracket are not tight. They are under the steering column, about half way to the pedal. They take a 12 mm bolt. If they were loose on mine, i would be able to slide the wheel in/out a couple of inches. There is a splined slider joint in the steering column as a safety feature in the event you are in a collision.
