Grinding noise in my 96' PAbradybsw 01-18-2009, 06:43 PM I have a grinding noise in the front right side of the car when I accelerate really really really hard. I mean I have to gun it to where the ash tray hits the back windsheild. Other than that it is really smooth and makes no noise under normal conditions. It seems to be worse when I in first gear with the pedal to the metal in a curve. I just installed new wheel bearing hubs but this did not seem to make a differance. Should I just slow down a bit or could the grinding im hearing be the axel going bad. I dont hear anything when I am turning slowly like I do in other cars with bad CV axels. I also seems to be worse between 0-70 mph, it dont hear anything when I get up around 110 or so. :grinyes: HotZ28 01-18-2009, 10:22 PM Obviously, you have a Pa Ultra; otherwise, you would not be accelerating that fast and cruising @110! I think you should first tighten your ashtray to keep it in place, and then take a close look at that CV axle. You may have a bearing problem in the tranny output housing. Any mods to this car? bradybsw 01-19-2009, 10:06 AM Thanks HotZ!! Of course its an Ultra!! Otherwise I would not be racing every old woman with a HEMI I see. Im sure that leaving every red light like a bat out of hell is causing some damage to the car but I have a good technician that fixes everything I tell him to, however we are stumped on this one. How can I tell if is the CV axel or the trans output bearing without tearing the car down? HotZ28 01-20-2009, 04:41 PM Thanks HotZ!! Of course its an Ultra!! How can I tell if is the CV axel or the trans output bearing without tearing the car down? Not much we can do to help with your obsession for racing “old women with a Hemi,” you might consider consulting with ‘Dr Phil’ on that! :cwm27: Of course, therapy will cost more than a few parts, so the choice is yours! I know the Hemi badge can be a bit intimidating, but I hope you are showing the old ladies that an Ultra is a not easy prey. :evillol: (I think those old women watched too many “Hemi” commercials on TV!) :loser: Now, back to your problem; you should first have your technician inspect all trans/motor mounts, especially the left front trans mount & right front motor mount, if they check fine, take the easy route & install a complete new CV axle assembly. (They only cost about 70-bucks and come with a lifetime warranty.) In addition, if you buy a new one rather than a rebuilt one, there is no core charge. Next, tell your technician to remove the hub-bearing the same as before, along with the lower ball joint, tie-rod end & sway-bar end-link bolt, then tilt the spindle up and pull the shaft out or the trans output housing (Be sure to have a pan under this area to catch the trans fluid that will drain out) You will need your old axle from the car so you can take it with you to the parts store for comparison. Call first, to be sure they have one in stock. Be sure to buy a new drive axle seal for the output housing! When you have the proper CV shaft assembly, you can break apart the old one for inspection and hopefully see the problem. The Ultra right-side CV axle has an overall length of 24 7/16" & 33 outboard splines with 39 inboard splines and a male joint. It is common for the national parts stores to miss label, or put the wrong shaft in a box and give you one for the standard PA. (Not the same animal) :shakehead Assembly is just the opposite, be sure to apply lubriplate (white lube) to the CV axle housing where it makes contact with trans output seal, before installing the shaft assy. Refill the trans with fresh fluid when complete. Hopefully, this will take care of the grinding noise and if you have your ashtray tight, you should once again be ready to blow away the “old women with the Hemi” BTW, you are lucky to have a good technician that “fixes everything you tell him to!” :sly: bradybsw 01-22-2009, 08:30 PM Now, back to your problem; you should first have your technician inspect all trans/motor mounts, especially the left front trans mount & right front motor mount, if they check fine, take the easy route & install a complete new CV axle assembly. The first thing we check, like you said, was the "engine" mounts, motors are electric, and we found two broke mounts. The left front trans mount and the right front engine mount are both broke just like you said. I will have my technician replace tomorrow and give you an update. HotZ28 01-22-2009, 09:19 PM Wow!!! Did you ever think about letting the “old Hemi women” have fun without you being involved? Good luck, I hope the mounts resolve your problem! :iceslolan bradybsw 01-23-2009, 09:49 AM Thanks for the compliment, but what motors are electric on the motor/trans mounts? :dunno: Anyway, be sure to purchase mounts with a lifetime warranty; otherwise, you will have to buy new ones every year the way you are driving! Thanks for the clarification! BTW, when you go to a parts store, be sure to ask for motor/trans mounts, otherwise, they may be like me and not know what you are talking about! :evillol: bradybsw 02-04-2009, 09:15 AM Thanks again for the help HotZ. I replaced the engine mounts and that solved the problem. My tech had the mounts replaced in less than an hour. Its amazing when you think this is the best riding car I have ever been in and then you find and fix somthing like the engine mounts and it rides even better!!! Now off to find the little old lady with the Hemi. :naughty: HotZ28 02-05-2009, 07:46 PM Thanks for the feedback, it's amazing what new "engine"/trans mounts can do for the self-confidence of a Hemi-Hunter! Be careful with those old blue haired women, they can be dangerous behind the wheel of a Hemi! BTW, let us know when you have any kill stories to report! :icon16: vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
