95 lumina head or intake gasket?jborders30 01-17-2009, 09:06 AM I have a 95 lumina ls with the 3.1 v6, last week my wife was driving it and noticed that the temp gauge went almost to the red line was there for about ten seconds then went back down. I first thought thermostat and changed that. I drove it the next day and noticed that i was using alot of antifreeze. I lost probably 2 gallons of antifreeze and probably only drove 60 miles. There are no visible leaks and I've noticed that the oil level has risen some but not alot. Maybe only half an inch on the dipstick. Could anyone tell me does this sound like the intake or the head gasket? Blue Bowtie 01-17-2009, 12:05 PM Only a pressure the (both cold and hot) will reveal that kind of leakage with any certainty. By your description, it could be either. BTW - Is the interior floor wet? slbcar 01-22-2009, 09:02 PM I just repaired my daughters 95 Lumina for "same" issue. Much smaller symptoms: Low Coolant warning. Temp gauge all over the place, eventually reaches HOT. No heat in car when gauge goes hot. We tried Hydrocarbon test for exhaust in coolant (blown head gasket) and it passed... even though 4 weeks and 3 intake gaskets later I pulled the cylinder heads and #1 cyl. had a 2 inch split in the head gasket. Yours sounds bad and should show up much easier than mine. Dave_R 01-23-2009, 03:07 PM On mine, I had the same symptoms a few years ago. Although it seemed to me at the time that the oil level increased a bit, but was clean (black, anyways) and NOT milky. It ended up being a radiator leak. It DID NOT leak any liquid at all, and there was no moisture or puddles that I could see. The only way I found it was when I warmed up the engine realy well, I could see a faint "hiss" of steam towards the bottom. It went through about a gallon of coolant every 20 minutes of driving or so. Anyways, something easier to check first! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
