My accelerator at times sticks and I have to mash down on the acc. to get the van to slow down. any ideas on what can cause this to happen. could it be the accelerator cable?

First I'd remove the air cleaner tube to your throttle body and check to see if there is a build up around the throttle plate. Give this area a good cleaning. If this does not help visually check the operation of the cable while someone works the pedal, WITH THE ENGINE OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Hope this helps.

It could be the cable getting gummed up with hardened grease & dirt.

BUT; A broken motor mount can also do this.

This is a VERY dangerous situation you have there!
