1941 Willys Twin Turbo / Supercharged...kanedge 01-07-2009, 07:18 AM Here is my latest creation that I have been working on. It's in its advanced stages, but I wanted to see what everyone thinks of it, so please bear this mind if it goes a little quick at the start. I'm trying to build this like the owner is building it to take out SEMA or Summernats Grand Champion. We'll see how he goes. This is the kit that I'm using and various parts associated with it. It's a really nice kit, the molding is quite clean with little clean up, so I'm happy about that. I'm going to use the kit wheels, but will Alclad them. Now I have made some slight modifications to the frame. I scratchbuilt the front and rear suspension out of aluminium tube and styrene. I'm trying to lower this kit, as it looks really nice, but in my opinion sits way too high. Here is the frame modified and in colour as well as some other various parts in colour. The colour is MM Huggar Orange with Tamiya Pearl clear over the top. The artificial lighting doesn't show it very well. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3393.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3394.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3395.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3396.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3399.jpg kanedge 01-07-2009, 07:19 AM The front had to be quite extensively modified to make it as low as I wanted. This involved cutting all the arms off the frame and reversing them and moving them higher. Here you can see completed front end with shocks and springs. The back end was much easier, this just involved making shorter shocks and springs. I cut all the molded nuts off and have added ScaleMotorsport photoetch nuts and bolts across the board. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3400.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3401.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3402.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3404.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3405.jpg kanedge 01-07-2009, 07:20 AM I painted the engine block and other parts in the same orange. Here is a mock up of the frame and engine together. And now for the unveiling which is the part I'm most happy about. This is the stance which I have able to achieve with a couple of small modifications. Next step for me now is to work on the engine as I have a couple of changes I want to do to that. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3406.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3407.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3408.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3411.jpg kanedge 01-07-2009, 07:22 AM These are the pulleys for the engine, all lovingly handmade with 0.5 and 1mm acrylic. Also I detailed the blower up as well. It's now all in primer ready for alclad. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3412.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3413.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3414.jpg kanedge 01-07-2009, 07:24 AM Also got the engine wired up. This turned out to be a pain in the royal behind, but I got it done. Made up a new hose for the front of the engine as well. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3416.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3417.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3418.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3419.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3420.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3421.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3422.jpg kanedge 01-07-2009, 07:28 AM All the wires are on and I got the belts installed. The belts make a huge difference to the appearance. And now I've started the turbo system. It was difficult initially but I got the pipes going from the headers into the turbo worked out (the critical part). And the good news is I will be able to hide it all, although it will be tight (I'd hate to have to work on the real thing). I used solder for the piping, which worked out to be a scale 2.5 inch. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3425.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3428.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3429.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3430.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3431.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3432.jpg Thanks for looking. Golden_Cross 01-07-2009, 09:49 AM What a piece of work..Outstanding workmanship..Can't wait to see the finished product..VERY NICE!!! Ferrari TR 01-07-2009, 02:57 PM Awesome engine! It does have a real SEMA feel to it. robrex 01-07-2009, 06:28 PM Nice work! jano11 01-08-2009, 06:36 AM Impressive! :worshippy Mikezibit 01-10-2009, 11:03 AM nice engine, the finished model looks good too :naughty: sportracer02 01-10-2009, 12:13 PM Great job, finished model looks great, it must have been lots of testfitting to bring the engine with coolers under the hood rollin80s 01-15-2009, 07:41 PM wow. that looks great.:eek2: what size solder did you use? 1/16? and what did you use for the belts? ribbon? Hawk312 01-15-2009, 08:08 PM That engine is spectacular! I am dying to know though, how did you do the crank and blower pulleys? How did you get the "grooves" in them? black_88 01-18-2009, 05:41 PM where did you get the turbo's ? kanedge 01-22-2009, 06:47 AM Thanks guys, it means a lot. Not sure of the solder size, but it worked out to be a scale 2.5 inches. It is about 2mm diameter. The belts are actually Modellers seatbelt material cut to correct width. The main part of the pulley I made at my old job with a laser cutter and white acrylic. Turbos are from The Parts Box. Here is the completed engine as well as completed interior. Thanks for looking. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3522.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3523.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3524.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3528.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3597.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3598.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3599.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3600.jpg kanedge 01-22-2009, 06:48 AM Here is the body after being cleared. I'm still waiting to polish it (I'm scared to)... http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3659.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x273/kanedge/Scale%20Models/1941%20Willys%20Show%20Rod/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_3660.jpg j javier 01-22-2009, 02:00 PM hello, nice and clear engine, but the hoses ar correct? I think, that they must go from the intercooler to the air intake in the top of the engine, and not to the turbo, or is a detail missing in the photo??? blwnrtr93 01-22-2009, 02:20 PM hello, nice and clear engine, but the hoses ar correct? I think, that they must go from the intercooler to the air intake in the top of the engine, and not to the turbo, or is a detail missing in the photo??? I agree. Very good looking model, but the turbine outlet should lead to the intercooler and then from the intercooler to the supercharger. kanedge 01-22-2009, 04:06 PM Yes I know the turbo is not correct, but you can't see it once the body goes on. I'm using the intercooler as the means of catching the air for the turbos as this is right behind the grill. This wasn't even supposed to have a turbo in it until someone at my LHS dared me to do it, after I'd built a lot of it. rollin80s 01-22-2009, 05:04 PM i like it allot. supercharge w/twin turbines. but like the other guys, the direction of the pipes just don't look right. but if can't see it, then what the hell. it's a model that looks awesome! Golden_Cross 01-22-2009, 10:50 PM i like it allot. supercharge w/twin turbines. but like the other guys, the direction of the pipes just don't look right. but if can't see it, then what the hell. it's a model that looks awesome! I AGREE..IF YOUR NOT PLANNING TO FIRE THIS BEAST UP AND CRUISE THE LOCAL DRIVE IN THEN THE ROUTING OF THE HOSES IS NOT A BIG DEAL..THE FABRICATING ON ALL THE PIECES LOOKS GREAT..THE DETAIL ON THE ENGINE IS KILLER..LOVE THE CLEAN LOOK OF THE ENTERIOR..NICE PAINT..JOB WELL DONE IMO.!!:2cents: MidMazar 01-24-2009, 12:59 AM I gotta say that this is one of the best willys i have seen. The body looks flawless, one other thing that was not mentioned is that the piping going into the turbo is too small. Like you stated alot of it won't be seen once finished. Keep us updated as this is an awesome build. Mrak 01-24-2009, 06:24 AM Really nice and clean build! Stunning work! But I think vou made a wrong setup for turbos -> where is the air intake? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
