I have a 1998 Rodeo 3.2 dohc v-6, Can anyone tell me if the Evap canister vent solenoid mounted on the rear of the vehicle above the spare tire, ( NOT THE PURGE SOLENOID mounted on the intake manifold) is a normally open or a normally closed solenoid. I have the solenoid in hand off fo the vehicle and I am able to pass air thru it. Thanks

This is a wierd system to figure out, at least by reading the factory manual. I have a 2001, assuming it is the same, the Fuel and Emissions manual somewhat contradicts itself, but after reading the description several times, I believe it is normally open:

"EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid. Located next to the canister, the vent solonoid opens to allow air into the EVAP system. Fresh air is necessary to completely remove gasoline fumes from the canister during purge. The EVAP vent solenoid closes to seal off the evaporative emmissions system for leak testing"

notice the underlined section - I read it as, if it closes, it needs to be actuated that way, so normally open.

What's your problem anyway?

I have logged a P0440 code and I had the truck smoke tested and smoke was leaking out of the vent located next to the vsv. I removed the solenoid and I can pass air through it. I was just wondering if that is normal. The coil does not have a break in it so I assumed the valve should be normally open. Your reply pretty much confirms that it is normally open.

Can you can "pass air thru it" with the coil energized, un-energized, or both? If both it's bad.

I only have 4.5 volts to this solenoid, what is the normal voltage to this solenoid?
