2000 Beetle- Hesitation after cold start onlybugwubber 01-05-2009, 03:40 PM Just wanted to post a solution to the problem I was having. Hope this helps someone- 2000 Beetle 2.0 Engine 110k miles Problem- On cold starts only, engine would hesitate and fight reving above 2k or going over 20mph for the first 3 min. Engine would then instantly begin working normally although acceleration seemed a tad bit sluggish. It was so precise that on my daily commute, I could predict within 100ft the spot in the road the engine would start working normally. The CEL would fire if I pushed the gas too much during this 3 min period. The code descriptions were -Cylinder 1 misfire detected -Cylinder 4 misfire detected -Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected -Engine too rich Attempted Fixes- New plugs (needed replacement anyway) Cleaned mass airflow sensor with "MAF Cleaner" Oil change to check for signs of coolant leakage Final Solution- Replaced mass airflow sensor with rebuilt- $104 after core charge refund Tools needed- phillips head screwdriver and pliers. To replace, I unplugged the wires attached to the MAF and disconnected a smaller hose with a squeeze disconnect. I then unscrewed the two screws holding the air filter lid in place and used pliers to squeeze open the hose clamp so I could separate the MAF and filter box lid from the intake duct. Two more screws to remove the MAF from the lid. Replaced with new, reassembled. Temp outside was around 0 degrees farenheit. Car started up and exhibited no hesitation at all. After a few days, the CEL turned off by itself. Franco2112 01-06-2009, 11:46 AM Thanks! Info will certainly help someone down the road. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
