neon just stops running help me!!tomendez 12-25-2008, 05:15 PM i have a 98 dodge neon and with no waring it will shut off.i have changed sparkplug and wires and even changed the fuel pump i took it the shop but of coaerse it wouldnt mess up with them.also when i change plugs they were covered in oil is my engine no good????please help Scrapper 12-25-2008, 06:02 PM was the oil on them on the outside or was the oil saturated on the end where it fires? denisond3 12-26-2008, 10:51 AM I think your -engine- is okay, and that the problem is outside of the engine, but still under the hood, and may be tricky to diagnose. Do you get any 'codes' when you do the test using the check engine light? If you dont know how to do this, go to the "Neon 1st generation forum" that adjoins this forum, and enter the 'FAQ' topic. Read the Q&A having to do with the Check Engine Light being on (even if yours is not on). Then tell us what the resulting codes, or lack of codes is. From here on are my guesses... 1. Right after it quits, check for fuel pressure, by carefully depressing the stem of the Schrader valve (its under the plastic cap) on the fuel rail - a small amount of gasoline should squirt out at you, due to 49 psi pressure. If no fuel squirts out, its a lack of fuel pressure problem. 2. Have a look at the wiring harness that runs from the PCM, over to the engine and down behind it. You will have to look up from below for this. That wiring harness can get pretty well cooked from the heat from the exhaust, and the wires can be starting to short out - due to melted insulation. Also the crankshaft position sensor is back there, near the end of the wiring harness, and it can go bad. It can go bad intermittently (because its getting marginal) or it can quit suddenly. 3. If that doesnt help at all, undo enough stuff (air inlet duct, maybe the wiring harness supports/cable-wraps, etc) so you can remove the camshaft position sensor. See if there are lots of scratches on the surface that faces inward, toward the end of the camshaft. The camshaft can wander left-right somewhat and if it rubs through the plastic can contact wires insdie the cam position sensor. If there are signs of abrasion there, a new cam position sensor -might-help. I suspect the target magnet that is screwed onto the end of the camshaft can age and lose some of its magnetism; so another thing to try would be getting a new target magnet. I had to get mine from a dealer. Our 97 Neon would quit anytime we pulled away from a stop sign while turning right; unless we pulled away at a very slow creep. Once it stopped it would NOT RESTART until we had completely removed the ign key for 30 seconds!! And of course the only way to get the key out is to stop the car and put it in park. Thats really convenient on a 6 lane highway in a friday afternoon rush hour. I replaced a dozen of melted wires in the engine wiring harness, and the problem was solved. I had the wiring harness off the car to make the repair though - sort of a big and tiring job. That entire engine wiring harness is available from dealers ($$$), and if enough of us ask for it at auto parts places, perhaps someone will make up some aftermarket harness that arent so expensive. If the oil on your spark plugs is on the part above the trheads, that is due to the 'plug tube' not having a good seal at its bottom; a rubber seal which is inside the camshaft cover. The oil is harmless as far as I can tell. Be sure to clean it off the plug before you put the plug back in the motor, to avoid fouling the plug tip. hidaldo 07-29-2009, 08:55 PM I had a simular problem with a 2002 neon the problem was the positive battery cable has a lead that goes to the fuse box under the hood, it was corroded replacing the cable fixed the problem vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
