well sounds like i'm not the only one with an oil drinking passport, just wondering what problems i could run into if i keep getting routine oil changes and adding oil in between when needed

What year, engine, mileage, etc.

Are you the original owner?

Hundreds of Isuzu owners are using Rotella synthetic 5w-40 diesel/gas engine rated oil found at walmart combined with either a pureone, K&N, or Wix oil filters, with great results.

Do not use a fram filter, and do not be using 5w-30 oil, sounds like your truck's drinking it.

Its a 1999 with 77,000 on it and i'm the second owner parents had it before me who maintained it very well

You happen to have that year where the rings in the engine were not designed to the best flowing capability, openings are small, causing crud to build up and thus causing oil usage. Sometimes to the extreme.

What oil are you using now? And, how often are you changing it?

An Isuzu specialist very highly recommends the Rotella diesel oil in these engines, and I would change it around the 2k mile mark for the first time usage. Then on your 2nd round with it, go perhaps to 3k miles.

This oil will clean a lot of gunk out of your engine and slow the consumption down drastically, but it will take several thousand miles to do so, as it takes time to break down nasty goo.

The nasty goo, btw, can and does build up even when oil changes are every 3k miles, specially on the 98-00 trucks.

Do NOT use any kind of engine cleaner additive, simply, on your next oil change, buy and use the Rotella synthetic diesel oil and you can use it indefinitely, best oil for these engines.

I believe its valvoline and I've been changing it methodically every 3k My mechanic says he would like to clean the cylinders for 200 bucks or is this the cleaning additive your warning me about Thanks a ton for the tip and extra information can't wait to give rotella a try

I recently had the cylinders cleaned on my 2000 (at the dealer) and have not had any issues (I wasn't burning any oil). I also have been using seaFoam (and adding Chevron Techron to the gas) at every oil change for the past 70k.

Again no oil burning or pinging issues for me (I change my oil every 3k; and switch to synetic 2 years ago). Some here are not fans of oil/gas additives.

2 other reasons for burning oil, is a plugged EGR/EGR tube and a dirty stuck PCV valve. Both can be cleaned with carb cleaner.

good link with a bunch of other links to read up on:

Luckily mine has never been an oil burner (about 1 qt every 3k miles) which is surprising with the previous owners lack of maintenance. I was using mobile 1 (5w30) and recently switched to valvoline max life synthetic (5w30). I use sea foam before oil changes (pour in 1/2 can then drive to the oil change place). So far its working good. The rotella diesel oil is very good stuff, for now I'm satisfied with the oils I've been using but if it starts becoming an oil burner I'll switch to the rotella.

HERE (http://www.isuzuforums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1877) is a post I made on another forum with quotes from Jerry (the Isuzu specialist Ramblin Fever talked about) that explains the reason for it and how to take care of the problem.

Hi Guys,

I just change my oil last weekend with Rotella synthetic 5w-40. It is expensive oil. I am wondering if I could extend my OCI to perhaps 5K instead of 2K or 3K miles. I know Ramblin Fever suggested 2 to 3K miles but it is expensive oil though. Any suggestion on that.

I'm saying 2 or 3k for your 1st oil change with the new oil, cause it will loosen up *some* gunk AND you want to try and get as much of the older oil out, cause even after an oil change, you're still going to have some Valvoline mixing with the Rotella.

What filter did you get?

I absolutely refuse to hit more then 4k on my oil changes, even with the Rotella. My engine has always been tick free and doesn't use any oil, so I'm real picky about trying to keep it that way for as long as I can.

I can justify the cost for the Rodeo, as it's only averaging an oil change every 6 mnths now, and possibly only 3k on the oil at the time...we don't drive it as much as we used too. Trying to keep the miles off of it.

My Tacoma runs Castrol synthetic, but happens to have an engine that's much easier on the oil and has a lot less miles, so I push it to 6-7k; and my diesel cummins only gets drove a few times a month, it gets an oil change only once a year or 7,500 which-ever comes first.

I don't see why you couldn't run it out to 5-6k miles as long as you have a GOOD filter on it, and you check your level regularly. But I wouldn't do that on the first change to the new oil.

Problem with telling people to run it out that long, is many owners forget to check the level on the oil burning Isuzu's and run them dry.

Well, I used PureOne oil filter and checking my oil almost every two weeks. Mine burn a lot of oil and tick at the same time that why I check it so often. I just want to go 5K for OCI if it seems reasonable to you. Thanks.

Again, I wouldn't on the first OCI with the Rotella, but, it's your truck...you need to do what's best in your mind and what works with your budget, all at the same time.

Keep us posted. Pureone's are good filters.

You can always just change the filter to get past the first run of the Rotella without an early oil dump. It is expensive oil, not doubt. Check out the forums on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and look in the used oil analysis section. Might be able to find an oil analysis on the Rotella to give you an idea of how many miles you want to run it.
