Hello, friends!
That's my another scratchbuilding project. I love this prototype from my childhood. Its name's Ferrari Dino Berlinetta Competizione. It was designed in 1967 by Paolo Martin for Pininfarina, and was built on Ferrari 206S chassis.
I thought to assemble an Airfix rare kit, which I've bought on E-bay.
http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/3005/mikhailpetrenko.2/0_1e7fd_e5654da5_XL.jpg (http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/mikhailpetrenko/view/124925/)

But when I saw, that it has not correct overall dimensions, I decided to build it anew. My brother has helped me with 3D model.

And at first I got bodyshell by rapid prototyping method. I have paid for this only 50$, but there is necessary to make improvement by filling and CNC milling of surface. It will be very soon. For now it looks like this.

Great subject choice as always

Wow, looking forward to seeing this one through! I think we'll see a lot more of this kind of modeling as people become more familiar w/3D design and rapid prototyping becomes more affordable, hopefully to a point where we can afford a setup right on our workbench.

Nice work Stratos75. I've done some amateur 2D flat pattern work designing balsa RC planes on TurboCad v12 that I purchased for about $20 at Amazon. Once complete I emailed the files to a business equipped with a laser cutter who charged my credit card and shipped me the laser cut balsa and plywood.

Doing a quick google for rapid prototyping services I found several that will create a 3D object from customer supplied STL files. So it looks like this is financially within reach to most any hobbiest right now! But wait, how are your 3D CAD skills? I think that's the limiting factor here. I know how long it took me to learn TurboCad 2D in my spare time. I shudder to imagine the steep learning curve required to make that Dino file. The creator probably does this kinda work professionally.

Amazing. I don't really see what's wrong with the red one to be honest, but the new one sure looks good too. What an incredible way to make a model!

:eek2:Excellent start to this brave project!
Kudos to your brother for his 3D design skills!

I'm looking forward to see this project develop, it sure will be excellent to watch.

If I may ask, where do you get the blueprints for your projects?

Thanks, friends!
...I don't really see what's wrong with the red one to be honest...
It's 7 mm longer, 5 mm wider, 2 mm higher and has some distortions in a shape. Also the Airfix model has 15" wheels instead 13". So I'll mill new wheels too. The engine I'll copy from Fujimi's Ferrari Dino 246 GT.

There are no any blueprints, but only fotos. We use a Photomodeler program to find base points. Then they convert to Catia, where we build curves and surfaces, then control points convert back to Photomodeler, compare with photos, correct in Catia, compare with photos again and ets.
Now I want to show some problems of a body surface what has made by SLS method in other light. It needs in filling.

The rough surface is normal for a machined part. It would be impossible to make a perfect one because the tool's cutting edge should be very very small and also it should move with impossible to achieve small steps.

Did you try 3D printing? It is expensive but it also gives better finish.

Wouldn't it be easier to just sand it instead of filling it?

CrateCruncher

That surface reminds me of the some of the white metal castings in Hiro kits. Maybe they're using a similar process.

Is the matrial milled from a chunk with a tool or is it a liquid cured in tiny amounts as the surface is created?

I can to mill all parts free of charge because I've got CNC milling machine on my job and it gives me more smooth surface. But I've used SLS method for build time reduction, although it costed to me of some money. This method is relatively low cost. More about it read for example there http://www.brightopinc.com/Prototyping.htm The same work on SLA method would cost to me about 150-200$:crying:

Thanks for showing the comparison pics. Very interesting!!! It all depends on how good your references are though right - and how accurately you can model them. Your process does sound very accurate though. Again, thanks, and great stuff.

Thanks for the link.
Now I see why you got the rough surface on the prototype.
There is a need for puttying it but it will be fairly easy and fast to do, and you sure won't have difficulties doing it.

Also thanks for the info on the 3D modeling process, I'll take a look at that Photomodeler software as I'm planing to to a few not existing models in the future.

Good news for me from Fujimi. I ordered their Dino and hope it will be much better than the same from Airfix.
Nevertheless I continue the work. I finished to mill a body surface. Yellow is a polyester putty.

Is it worth to you to continue doing this if the Fujimi is a good kit? I understand that it gives you satisfaction but it does take a lot of time.

You should be glad that you can do a better job than the Fujimi guys. :)

I'm happy too, as I bought the Fujimi kit and will have plenty of work to do to make it look OK! :D

alot of work for minimal imperfections imo but should look cool when finished.
I like the fact that your designing it and producing the model yourself..good luck
