Engine light on 2000 Montana

Hi everyone I'm new here. I scanned using the scanner and I have two codes coming up on the scanner. The first one is P0420 and the second one is P0420P. Does anyone know what they mean.

The engine also spits, sputters, backfires and quits as soon as you touch the gas. One person thinks its lower gaskets.
