I am driving down the freeway and motor turns off, RPM gauge drops to zero. I place transmission in neutral while coasting and motor starts running again.I continue driving and as I accelerate it does it again.I place trans in neutral and motor starts running again. It continues to do this all the way home.Again and again and again. Does anyone have an idea or answer to my problem? Thanks.

Fuel pump?? It idles but does not run well at high speeds?? Maybe fuel pump.

Are you restarting it, or it just jumps back up to a normal idle once placed in neutral?

Auto or manual trans?

With what you gave us to work with, I have to agree with mpumas, sounds like fuel starvation under load...

Put it to the floor when it does it and see if you get a big intake backfire out of it...that would indicate extreme lean (fuel starvation)

Or fuel filter

Auto trans-I just remembered this morning when the RPM gauge dropped to zero I assumed the motor shut off.But after thinking about it the 1st time it did it I tried to restart it while coasting and it was still running. It was when I placed the trans in neutral while coasting that the RPM gauge came back on which made me think the motor started running again when it was probably idling. Is it possible the RPM gauge is bad? If that is true what is required to fix it? During normal driving when I am accelerating from a stop the RPM gauge is working just fine. When I accelerate really fast after being stopped if I get around 3000 rpm or higher the RPM gauge starts bouncing all over the place. On the fwy around 60 mph or higher the RPM gauge is bouncing around but the motor is still running smooth. I also checked my records and it has been 40,000 miles since my last fuel filter so I will change that.

Thanks Guys for the help and suggestions. It was the fuel filter.I am so busy keeping my kids cars maintained I neglected to changed this fuel filter at 30,000.It runs fine.I took it on the fwy and the RPM never jumped.

Come to think about it, I've got over 100K on my fuel filter. Maybe I should change it.
