Hi I need help I have a 2001 ram 1500 with the engine light on. Anyone out there have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9 been able to successfully retrieve the codes stored without taking it in? I have a scanner that came up linking error whenever trying to scan it so I bought a better one (autoxray 6000) now waiting almost 2 weeks for it and it tells me "vehicle is not responding" on this one. This is after I called the company to confirm it WOULD work with my truck before purchasing it. Please help the check gauges light is on and the gas gauge stopped working (I put 10 galons in thinking it was siphoned) but nope still nothing. I can only start it by holding down the throttle and then as soon as I let off it dies instantly no trying to run or nothing, also if I hold the throttle in any position the rpms will drop off every half to one second then come back up. And finally when I just have the key in the ON position I can hear the sound of relays clicking over and over but dont know why. I am told that means they are working but thats it I dont know why they are clicking. I drove it yesterday about 100 mile round trip with no issues now today this, it only has 67k on it. Please any suggestions and anyone who has successfully retreived code please let me know and would be greatly appreciated Thank You so much

Make sure you don't have any blown fuses. There are some you may think don't have anything to do with the ALDL but they do!

Yes I did forget about them, went out and checked and there all fine, I wonder if part of this problem is also causing my scanner to not work properly as well.

Usually if it won't run without holding your foot on the gas, the IAC is bad.

Hey awesome do you know how I can test it to be sure if it is working or not?

Without a realy good scan tool there is no real way of testing it. The best thing to do is remove it and clean it,and the hole where it goes into the TB and try it. If it acts the same or is a little better, then it's probably no good. Or sometimes it solves the prob.

Can you get your codes by turning the keyswitch On-Off-On-Off-On then see codes on the odometer?

I dont know about the odometer thing but I will try it. I performed an actuator test by holding down the odo reset then turning on the truck and it gave me 2 codes for the instrument panel 999 and 111. 999 is the code telling me it as found an error and i assum 111 is the error but I cant find any info on that, but that also isnt for obd just for the instrument cluster.
