I am buying a 1995 Suburban 454 4x4 and would like to know from owners what type of milegae I could expect on hwy at approx 65 mph empty. I know its not going to be great but I would really like to get some kind of idea.
Many thanks, Dave...

Very informative, something my 8 year old would come up with....

Depends on what size gears you have in the rear. On the highway you are going to be somewhere around 10 MPG. I drove my grandfathers '99 with a 454 and that's about what it was on the highway. It had 3.73 gears, so if you have 4.10's it will be a little worse than 10. Also the '99 got about 8 MPG in town or so.

6-10 if you are luckie.
The best thing is to test drive it and check actual mileage.
As said gear ratio and tires and tune up condition makes a differance.
They are good work horses for a work truck but not good just for transportation the gas mileage will kill you.
Good Luck

Minor note to add...check to see if the tires are a different size than the originals (check the driver's door sticker for this info). Odd size tires can play havoc with the speedo and odo, resulting in inaccurate mpg calculations.

You can do a pretty simple check on the highway to see how accurate the odo is by comparing the odo to the mile markers over a larger distance (25-50 miles) or by using a GPS to compare the indicated versus actual speed.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, all good information. I figured it wouldn't be great but as you mentioned, they are designed as work horses and as passenger vehicles, just going to have to bight the bullet as to gas mileage.

A 350 cu-in, is there much of a difference with this size of truck. It has to work harder due to the weight but is there much of a saving?

my friend owned one and back in 95 it got 10-12 mpg...ave...with the fuel used today and the added age/miles it is gonna be less then 10mpg..

since you are interested in this vehicle your required uses should determine if this is the correct vehicle...

next year sometime fuel could be back to 4-6.oo/gallon...

I just checked mine last week. I got 8.2 on the last tank.
When I bought mine, I concluded that either the 1500 or the 2500 were gonna get crap for mileage - I might as well have the umph of the big block!

with that mpg your engine must be running good, and in good condition..I thought just under 10mpg would be the expected mpg for this vehicle..

If you want power and a big block, upgrade to the 8.1 which will outrun the 454.The 454 gets very horrible gas mileage. The 454 is very hard to come by these days,a grand for an used 454 if you find one from an auto salvage yard.

Hello to everyone. I was just about to start a topic about this.
I have a 94-95 GMC Burb with 454 and 4.10 gears. Lockup rear end. I just figured mine and I get a whopping 7.5. I do ALOT of city driving. Check your sensors. I did and runs much better. I do have off road tires that came with the truck.
So after reading the posts, I will look for a compact car. Can't do much for my baby I see! But she aint leaving me.

Blessings

I just purchased a '96 K2500, 454, 4.10 gears, 265/75 tires, K&N element, Tornado. Couldn't help myself, it has the Trail Master conversion package, almost impossible to find in the 4x4 trucks; this is replacing my '98 K1500 with the same Trail Master conversion.
I'm getting 10.3 avg mpg, mostly highway driving. I figure she might increase a little since she was sitting on the dealer's lot for about 6mo. It has a Tornado installed, don't know if it helps, but compared to what others are reporting, it just might help. My '98 K1500 with 3.73 gears was getting 14 highway.
The extra power sure is nice, and worth it!!

It runs very well, and the truck is in great shape overall. That said, I have a previous thread about replacing the 4WD actuator, and I've had to rebuild both front door hinges and I replaced the steering box for leakage. I also have the oil cooler lines to replace at its first oil change, coming up this or next weekend. All in all, though, I'm happy with the purchase. Since I bought it for $3000.00, I can easily justify the $700 I've had to put into it so far.
I'm also going to check highway mileage here soon. I trust it will be over 10mpg easy.

Just gotta say this is one of the dumbest responses to a question I've seen on the forums. :screwy:
