This camry has 4 wheel disc brakes. I just replaced the pads and was looking for how the parking brake works. The parking brake will not lock in the up position. My experience with other parking brakes always had one set of drum brakes. I am wondering what I am supposed to be looking for.

The inability to lock your parking brake is probably a problem with the handle mechanism, not your brakes itself. I assume you mean that you cannot set the parking brake if the handle pulls up all the way. This then is an adjustment problem. It is not clear which problem exists in your vehicle.

Your parking brake is a set of drum brakes inside the hub of your rear rotors. You adjust them similarly to normal drum brakes.

Download at least the brakes section of the FSM from the following link and follow the procedure listed.

In addition to what Brian mentioned, also consider a broken brake cable from the brake handle to the rear wheels.

Sounds like more info is needed on what you're experiencing. Handle comes up but doesn't lock? Handle locks but no actual braking? Brakes engage but not holding the car? More clues please....

Will I know now what was wrong with the parking brake not locking. After taking the console cover off there was the problem. Sticky pop, yes sticky pop having been spilled down inside console by my daughter probably repeatedly over time. Finally keeping the lock part from working. I little cleaning and WD-40 all is well. Live and Learn. Thanks .
