95 Camry timing belt issues!!!

I have a 95 camry LE 2.2L 4 cyl. Auto trans. my timing belt is so loose it is vibrating on the timing cover. The car is running fine besides this. I am currently in the middle of changing the belt, tensioners, springs, etc. I cannot get the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley, camshaft gear, or distributor rotor to all line up at the same time. :banghead: I can get the rotor and cam gear to line up...but the crankshaft timing mark is way past my timing marks on the timing cover. WHAT SHOULD I DO?????

OK I have everything lined up. Put it all back together. Car started right up and running OK. I did notice that I now have oil coming from the timing belt cover. :banghead: I did replace the crankshaft front seal. Could this be it. Or could it be that I do not have the crankshaft bolt not tight enough????How can I tighten the bolt more????

You'll probably just have to open it up and see where the leak is coming from. Tightening the pulley bolt further won't help unless it is so loose it is practically falling off.

Might be worth pulling the upper cover back to see if it the cam seal! It doesn't happen to often but I have replaced a couple over the years.

All three seals should be replaced (crankshaft, camshaft, and oil pump shaft). The camshaft seal is usually the biggest culprit and makes the biggest mess.

I had the same alignment problem as you described, getting everything to line up at TDC. Next time, draw marks on the old belt and pulleys then transfer the marks from the old belt to the new one. This is because the old belt is under tension whereas the new one isn't. When the new belt is installed on the lined up shafts, it is slack until the crank is turned, creating the out-of-sync condition where the camshaft is lagging behind. The repair manuals don't mention this and would save ALOT of headaches.

Also, recheck your valve cover torques. Some manuals state an incorrect value. It should be 17 ft-lb. Too high will crack the cover.

Great point to bring up. I sure wish I knew that the first time I changed a timing belt. Would have saved me a couple hours and some aspirin.
