Can someone give me an idea of what goes into replacing the rear pinion flange on my tahoe. Apparently I have some play in it and as a result I am getting a nice D-line vibration when going down the Hwy around 70mph

the pinion flange can be replaced with the axles in place...you must have a torque wrench and mark all componets removed so that all are put back as before.

you must record the preload of the pinion ...the force taken to rotate the flange , then count the exposed threads on the pinion stem. With the pinion flange held un screw the pinion nut and washer..all machined surfaces need be protected from damage.the pinion then is removed

then remove the pinion seal..inspect for damage..


upon installing it would be the reverse. lube the new seal with bearing grease and install this and the new pinion flange...use new nut and secure the nut to the same value and thread as it was...rotate the flange as you tighten the nut the nut torque should be around the spec of 4-7 ft lbs..


measure the torque to rotate the pinion flange keep tightening the nut until it is as before...this is the preload...then install the axle as it was marked and tighten the drive shaft bolts to 15 ft lbs...


the use of a manual to show all this is recommended..not too hard of a job...

Hey JCAT thanks for the thorough response! I plan to get into this next weekend. I am having to replace my P-flange because my bad U Joint wallowed out my pinion flange. As a result, I am getting a nice vibration around 70mph, especially when letting off the gas and coasting down hill. I am wondering if I also have a bad outer pinion bearing. I guess it would be worth taking a look at while I have the flange off don’t you think?

yes. all the machined surfaces must be inspected for damage.
