Changing fuel injection in '96 5.7 - good upgrade

I just swapped out the fuel injector assembly on my 1996 Tahoe today. I was trying to fix a problem I was having with rough starts while warm, characterized by a drop in fuel pressure and a stumble when trying to start.

I had taken off the upper manifold a few weeks ago to replace the fuel pressure regulator, which didn't solve the problem. But, while I was in there I found that two of my injectors had broken ears (that hold them in place in the lower manifold), and one had a tab broken off affecting the spray pattern. All were filthy, and I suspected one was staying open enough to reduce fuel pressure.

At the time, I didn't have another fuel injector assembly to replace the one in the truck. So, I put it all back together and found a brand new unit on eBay from Borg Warner that upgrades the Central Fuel Injection to Multiport for $150 delivered - about the list price of two individual injectors, and over half off the new list price at any of the online parts sources.

I installed it today and it took about 4 hours, mainly due to the fact it was a real bear to remove and install the manifold as I didn't remove the water neck. Plus, I had to remove and reinstall the upper manifold to clean the opening for the main housing that connects to the electrical unit as it wasn't allowing the main control unit to pop up through the lower intake high enough, if that makes sense. Cleanup with some engine oil fixed that problem.

A few notes -
--Siphon out about a half gallon of coolant. That's enough to get the level low enough to remove the radiator hose.
--Electronic connections aren't as scary as I thought, they all go back together in an order that's pretty obvious.
--I should have bought a new gasket for the upper intake manifold, but the one I had was in very good shape.
--Immediately on startup the engine was missing on one cylinder very badly. I was ready to tear it all apart again until my buddy noticed one of the sparkplug wires had been bumped off the distributor. A scanner confirmed that was the only problem. Don't jump to conclusions - start at the beginning when analyzing why something's not working.

I really got the impression it drives much better now, and I'm not getting a telltale "miss" on the highway where you feel a split second of deceleration, like the transmission's slipping or you're on snow/ice.

I'm not a real gear head but if I can do this, anyone can. Pliers, 10mm socket w/extension, 8mm socket, flathead screwdriver, and an inch pound torque wrench are the tools you'd need. I hope this helps someone who's analyzing a problem and thinking of doing the job themselves at home.

Thanks for the link. Looks like you got a great buy on your injectors. I was hoping that the seller would have another set at the same price.

I'll keep looking.................
