95 Escort Wipers Screwed Updwbailey 09-18-2008, 11:47 AM I sent Selectron a message asking and wanted to throw the problem out here too for anybody else that might offer some advice/suggestions. Just bought a 95 Escort hatchback and the intermittent wiper position on the switch doesn't work at all and in the low and high positions they do. However, when you turn the wipers off they stay on the windshield in whatever posistion they were in when you turn them off. They don't go back to the fully down position. I took a guess and ordered a new switch off of eBay and am waiting on it to arrive. Was wondering #1 is there anything else that might cause that to happen and #2 is there anything specific I need to do to not set off the airbag when I go to pull the steering wheel to replace the switch. Thanks alot for any guidance/advice. mightymoose_22 09-18-2008, 04:42 PM I believe our problem is more likely to be with the wiper motor. You will be able to test the switch with an ohm meter and see what it is doing. I would guess though that there is a bad resistor or some corrosion going on with the wiper motor that is preventing it from working and parking properly. dlbdata 09-19-2008, 05:48 AM I have the exact same problem on my 95. Intermittent works intermittently, and some times the wipers will just stop. They work fine except with intermittent. Touching or wiggling the wiper control sometimes makes them move again. dwbailey 09-19-2008, 07:16 AM Thanks guys for the info. I already won a new switch off of eBay and will put it on and see what happens. Will post results when I get it on. I gotta find out how to take the wheel off without setting off the airbag. :frown: Selectron 09-21-2008, 02:30 AM I think you might find you have two separate faults. The loss of intermittent wipe is likely to be within the multi-function switch assembly, which has multiple potential failure points - the switch contacts themselves, the interval rheostat, and the electronic timer circuit. You're replacing the switch anyway though, so that should fix it. If not then check out the one external item which could cause it, which is the dark blue/yellow wire running from the switch to the motor - an open-circuit or bad connection on that wire could cause it. The lack of self-parking is likely to be a fault within the motor assembly, because the park switch is integral to the motor. Before replacing the motor though, I'd check that the ground connection is clean and secure, and do the same for the motor connectors, particularly the two ground connections. Also check that the wiper linkage is in good condition. This is the wiring diagram (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x64/Selectron/Escort/95-wipers-01.png) for the wipers, and these are the procedures for multi-function switch removal (http://www.freewebs.com/selectron/multi-function-switch.htm) and steering wheel removal (http://www.freewebs.com/selectron/steering-wheel.htm), and those are all for the '95. I'm not sure if the steering wheel really does have to come off to remove that switch - I think I've read some posts saying it does, and others saying it doesn't. I'd try it first without removing the steering wheel, but either way before commencing any disassembly I'd disconnect the battery at the negative terminal and then give it a few minutes for the airbag backup power supply to discharge. dwbailey 09-22-2008, 01:14 PM Selectron you are the man! Thanks a bazillion! I will try what you mentioned and print off the stuff from the links. I REALLY appreciate it! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
