hello, i'm thinking about buying a passat wagon (starting from 2002), as for every day commute, love how that car looks plus lots of cargo room... but before i buy i'd like an opinion about the engine options... which one is the one to go for? 1.8 gets better gas milage (at least thats what it says) so thats kind of tempting.. but with a turbo probably more problems, or am i wrong? and what about that w8 version?

thanks:)

the 2.8 v6 is by far the most reliable engine. The only issues they have is the pcv hose that goes from valve cover to valve cover (about 180.00 at the dealer) and the cam seals/cam adjuster seals.

Stay away from the w8 unless the engine has been replaced. Its not built to last long, its a engineeres engine not a good engine.

I bought a 2003 Passat GLX 2.8 V6 a few weeks ago. It has about 70K miles on it now and still gets 26 to 33 mpg. I believe the trip computer is showing 28 mpg average. Go with the V6 and manual transmission. Plenty of power and great economy in a very roomy car.
