I have a chance to buy a realy nice 02' car with a smooth running 2.7 in it with 74k miles. Is there some maninance procedures that would make this engine last?

Thanks
Dan

Change the oil every 3,000 miles, not over or before.Change to synthetic oil and Mobil 1 is recomended

These engines have a notorious sludge problem which interferes with the cam chain tensioner function.
The sludge is due to a design flaw which allows the engine oil to become overheated in spots. Conventional oil will produce sludge when overheated.
Synthetic oils will not.
IMO unless this car has had synthetic oil used in it, do not buy it. At 74k, the damage has been done with conventional oil useage.

for the most part there really is no way of making it last these engines are non-serviceable 99.9% of shops oput there won't even touch them

oil changes every 300 miles is your only bet

sorry to be a pesimist

You don't. One of the worst motors ever made. If you do decide to purchase, stick with the syethic oil and keep a close check on the coolant level.

I have repaired them and one never came back with no problems at all.Put cranshaft kits in them since they have a very weak bottom end and eat up crankshafts taking out rods too. They say replace the oil pumps,I don't and never seen a 2.7 come back with oil pump problems.Open the oil pump tube up and clean the screen up.Jasper does rebuild them with upgraded parts and I have installed one so far.

I'm on another forum that talks about the oil sludge issue and ways to deal with it:

I hope this helps.
