2007-2008 Ram 1500 differential and MDS questionCanukGMC 08-27-2008, 07:57 PM I don't really have a "problem" but I had a few questions I can't seem to find answers to about the new rams. You'd think dodge would put more info on their website but I couldn't even find MPG ratings on the thing. The rear diffs on most models of 1500 are listed as "anti-spin". Is that referring to a limited slip clutch pack carrier in the rear or a mechanical locker\spool that activated when in 4wd? I always get confused because when I test drove one and put it in 4x4 it says "LOCK" on the dash, to me that would indicate a locker being engaged in the rear end, but I find it more probably that anti-spin is a fancy way of saying same old LSD clutch style. The MDS system I know won't make the truck AWESOME on gas but does it perform well? It looks like I could almost get 20mpg on hwy with it (better than the 14mpg my old trucks had). Any major issues with these trucks? Thanks for the info, I have logged the last 4 yrs driving brand new (each year a new rental lease for work) 2500 turbo diesel rams and would assume alot of the characteristics are the same except maybe the engine (obviously) and maybe the weight so I'm just curious on what the general thought is. EDIT: also I read on a review online that the hemi needs mid grade fuel? Is this true? I've heard of needing premium for high compression performance engines (corvettes, ferrari's, etc) but never heard mid grade being recommended. Can I run reg without a kaboom? HEMIDAZE 08-29-2008, 09:25 AM As far as the rear end, I think they offer a locker on the Power Wagon. It's pretty much an off road option. As far as gas, my 03 HEMI owners manual says you can run 87 octane but they recommend 89 octane. It also says in so many words that if you use over 89 octane you are wasting your money. I was going to quote the manual. I had it in my hand last week right here at the computer and don't know where I put it. Thanks for the reply, I was doing some reading and they like to word the 4x4 as "locking the front and rear differentials together", it sounded like they meant a locker in one of the axles but I think it's just their way of saying it's not a viscous clutch based AWD but a real 4wd. I picked one up 2 days ago and all is well except this black tar I found on the roof about 10mins while washing it. For sure from the factory, time to send an email. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
