2000 Cherokee Sport Electrical Gremlinoldskool33 08-26-2008, 02:25 AM Just recently got my first ever Jeep. I knew it had a few minor issues, but the more I look into it, the weirder it gets. The owner's manual refers me to the fuse panel for the fuse diagram and the fuse panel refers me to the owner's manual. So I'm running a little blind. :banghead: The original issue I had was that electric windows only fuction from the driver's control. The stereo only plays through the driver's (front left) speaker. The ABS light won't come on and I'm not sure if its related but often when braking the rear speakers pick up a light high pitched feedback. Before I start tearing things apart, I'm looking through the wiring diagrams in the Haines manual to see if there's something common to all these systems that could be causing the problem. So far, I'm not having any luck. In the last few days, my instrument panel light went out and following that both my turn signals and hazard lights will not blink...the lights come on, they just won't blink. If I'm not mistaken, the lamp and the flasher are located behind the knee blocker in the steering column. I'd like to get the flasher and instrument light working as a priority. All fuses are good. I may get lucky and find a bad connection...I'll find that out a little later. But if I have to change the flasher, I don't wanna burn a new one up, does anyone know of any relation to this system and the other areas I'm having trouble with? Also...with the windows/stereo/brakes thing...any ideas? 2000izusu 08-26-2008, 08:05 AM the window problem is the lock out switch circuit bd. it is a well known problem! there are post on the web how to bypass it. i have done the mod on mine. for your turn signal issue try fooling with the hazard flasher switch on the top of the seering column. if it starts flashing your combo switch is the problem. it is another common high wear item. it is 53$ at the dealer and 39$ at autozone. mike oldskool33 08-26-2008, 09:05 AM the window problem is the lock out switch circuit bd. it is a well known problem! there are post on the web how to bypass it. i have done the mod on mine. for your turn signal issue try fooling with the hazard flasher switch on the top of the seering column. if it starts flashing your combo switch is the problem. it is another common high wear item. it is 53$ at the dealer and 39$ at autozone. mike I jumped the lockout to hot and the windows work now...so far so good anyway. I was a bit concerned about the probability of some common issue that might effect all the passenger side issues cuz I'd rather just fix it 1x, lol. If the combo switch was bad, would I still get lights with hazard or signal? The lights come on, they just don't flash. But now that I think of it, it was intermittent a little before it went out. I think I found the flasher...if that's what it is...right behind the knee gaurd is where its supposed to be. I've tried re-seating it but no change. It had been taped into the socket :uhoh:. Now I'm concerned that someone else has been monkeying with it. Oh well, I'll play with the hazards and see if they'll run again...I'm assuming they're plugged directly into the multi function switch? oldskool33 08-26-2008, 09:34 AM OK, I smacked the steering column on top of the hazards and they started blinking...so I guess I'll find the switch and install it. But the weird thing is, I got a funky feedback in my right and rear speakers each time they flashed. Maybe they're picking stuff up from a lifted ground? I read about speaker wire splices in door boots, but I don't think the rear speakers run through the doors do they? I'll tackle that last...any thoughts would be helpful. oldskool33 08-26-2008, 02:24 PM Before I replaced the multi function switch, I did a continuity test on the old one and it came up open a couple of times when it shouldn't have. So I put a new one in and voila'! Nothing...it doesn't even try to blink now. :banghead: I think I need a break before I drive to a nearby river and have an accident. oldskool33 08-27-2008, 09:03 AM Before I replaced the multi function switch, I did a continuity test on the old one and it came up open a couple of times when it shouldn't have. OK, I disconnected the battery and took the cowl off the steering column. The switch connections and installation were solid. I hooked up the battery and tested it again and wouldn't ya know, it works fine. Put everything back together again and it still works. Please don't ask me what went wrong or how it went right again..I have no idea. Its all F.M. to me. Now, I've removed the instrument panel and inspected the cluster illumination lamps. None of the filaments appear to be burned out. Maybe its in the headlight switch or the wiring from the switch to the instrument panel? oldskool33 08-27-2008, 11:43 AM Sheeesh! I replaced the headlight switch...now my turns and hazards quit again and my dome light stays on full time...its too light to be real sure, but it doesn't look like I fixed the instrument panel light problem either. I don't wanna put it in the shop, but this is getting old. I d/c the battery so it doesn't run down on the dome light. Maybe it'll do some more F.M. after I hook it up again later. Enough fun for now, gtg work. AlohaBra 08-31-2008, 11:57 AM vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
