ABS lightthe great gazoo 08-25-2008, 10:26 AM Hi I have a question hopefully some one can help. I recently picked up a 1999 malibu 3.1L starting yesterday my ABS light comes on. this is when it happens, I start the car everything is ok the ABS light is off. as soon as i drive 10 feet the ABS light comes on. I shut off the car and re-start the engine And the ABS light will be out, i drive 10 feet the light comes back on again. it happens every time. i assume it is a speed sensor at one of the wheels. How can i tell which one it is with out replacing them all one at a time. maxwedge 08-25-2008, 11:49 AM Most likely a bad wheel speed sensor, a scan with a abs function scanner will pinpoint the problem. the great gazoo 08-25-2008, 05:47 PM Thanks maxwedge my scanner does not have ABS feature. is there a way to check each sensor with a multi meter do you know what ohm reading i should have. off topic is that a 64 fury it's hard to see in the pic. is it yours? i have a 69 roadrunner 440 my best friend has a 65 sport fury convert. we cruise them to carslile every july maxwedge 08-25-2008, 08:11 PM Rear about 1030 to 1137, ft is 1020-1180. But sometimes they will pass this test and still not work. AD2BU 08-25-2008, 10:53 PM Also, be sure to check the wire harness. The left front sensor was bad on my 98, but it turned out to be just the wire harness. Spliced in a new connector years back and all has been well. the great gazoo 08-27-2008, 10:39 PM UPDATE PROBLEM FIXED ok i finally got my friend over with his snap-on MT2500 scanner. we ran a scan for the ABS it came up with 3 possible causes 1- bad ABS relay 2- bad ABS control unit 3- Alternator putting out more than 17 volts causing abs control to malfunction And the winner was.... #3 bad alternator at idle output was 15 volts when i hit the gas it would jump to 17.3 volts i replaced the alt and all my problems went away. With out the snap-on scanner i would never would of thought of the alternator causing my ABS troubles. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
