View Full Version : returning a used car if i havent transfered to my name returning a used car if i havent transfered to my name blank88 08-23-2008, 01:52 AM thanks easymuny 08-23-2008, 07:13 AM Blank 88, If you bought the car from an individual and you haven't signed the title or signed a bill of sale then the car is not yours. If you buy from a car dealer I think you have 3 days to return the car. Good luck, blank88 08-23-2008, 10:12 AM awesome, so what do i do if for some reason, the seller doesnt want to let me return the car? (really hoping it wont get to this, but just in case) easymuny 08-23-2008, 01:03 PM If you haven't signed any legal papers(title or bill of sale) proving that you bought the car, then he will have to take the car back. If he doesn't want to give your money back, I suggest talking with the sherrifs dept or police dept. You may have to take him to small claims court. In any case, if he won't give your money back be sure to let him know that you will take him to court. I hope you paid with a check or money order. Good luck, Ray paulsen 08-25-2008, 05:43 AM You paid for the car " took delivery " Transfer of ownership don't come into play. I really would like 2 questions answered before posting further (1) did you buy private or dealer (2) why do you suspect car was stolen The Continental 09-01-2008, 07:29 PM So can you just return it because you changed your mind? For dealers is it a legal window of 3 days later and is that for all states? Is there a window by getting it from the owner? I imagine buying a used car with damage would be risky for this as the person who sold it could just say the damage wasn't there when sold. easymuny 09-03-2008, 02:24 PM I asked a car dealer if I bought a car was there a legal amount of time that I could back out of the deal. He said that I had three days. I don't remember if it is just for the sale of new cars or if it applies to used car dealers too. As far as buying from an individual (private party), once you sign the bill of sale and the title has been signed by you and the other party, it is yours. If you buy from an individual there is no protection, that I know of. You will have to be sure that this is the car you want and that it is dependable. The only thing I found that might be true about this is, if a dealership provides you with a written guarantee to buy the car back, should you not be happy with it. Some dealerships may do this, but I can bet you won't find many that will. Related Links Participate in thousands of discussions at AutomotiveForums.com! Registration is absolutely free. |
