I have seen this topic in the forums but could never find a answer?

My 2000 intrigue has started making a irritating whining noise when the RPM go above 2200 ....probably unrelated but just had the pressure hose on the power steering replaced....and no steering or shifting issues, yet and hopefully none to comehttp://www.oldsmobileforums.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Please any help would be appreciated!!

I had a whinning noise that increased with rpm and saw a thread that recommended changing the power steering fluid. I changed most of it and 90% of the sound went away. I used a turkey baster to suck out old fluid from the reservoir. Turn the wheel a few times to fill the reservoir up again, suck out again. I did that a few times, the fluid was nasty. I also kept track of how much fluid I took out so I knew how much to add back in.

How long did it take for the squeel to go away, Like i said I just had the pressure hose for the power steering replaced and think they may have overfilled it. took some out, but the squeel is still there.

I also had the oil changed the same day is it possible the noise if from to much oil?

It went away (mostly) right after changing the fluid. How does your PS fluid look? I'm not sure if or how much fluid they would have changed when they fixed the hose. I don't think the the oil change would cause it but you can easily check if thats overfilled. You might even want to go back to the shop that did the work, show them whats up and maybe they can recheck their work. If none of that does anything I would consider having the tranny checked but maybe someone here has more ideas before it goes that far.

BTW, what happened that you needed that hose replaced? Whatever caused that problem could have damaged something.

the hose was leaking coming right out of the resevoir ....that is a big hose to ...there is no problem steering. The fluid didnt look that gross, but there was alot of it in there, used a turkey baster like you said, i am going to check the level now to make sure it is good.....this car is getting to be a real headache new noises all the time....still have a 1000 to pay on her to...

Just something else to consider is that some folks have had trouble with the water pumps on the 3.5, and a failing water pump could very well make a whining noise that would increase with RPMS.

when I checked the power sterring fluid yesterday, it did look kinda nasty, brown like motor oil ....going to change it out today with the turkeybaster, probably stop by Napa to pick up some cleaner.

I hope it is not the water pump...that sounds expensive....waht would happen if it was the pump?
